Virtual Humans: Hollywood CGI to Social Media & 3D Experience

Delivering “3D Human Presence” in Animation, Video, Immersion or AI technologies, has been an ongoing challenge for the entertainment and tech industries. But the latest iteration of Generative AI has taken giants steps forward empowering programmers and artists with AI and machine learning tools to simulate human movement, expressions, and even clothing physics. And now AI has added human-like conversations. From movies to Zoom and social media, Virtual Human presence and actual human are difficult to distinguish.

Edward Saatchi is a 2x Primetime Emmy Award-winner, producer of Oculus Story Studio’s Lost, Henry, Dear Angelica and Quill, and co-founder of Oculus Story Studio. He founded NationalField as part of the Obama Campaign and was named as Forbes 30 under 30 in technology for his technical contributions to the 2008 and 2012 campaigns with NationalField. In 2017, Saatchi and Pete Billington cofounded Fable Studio.


Matthias Wittmann, Visual Effects Supervisor, Digital Domain: Matthias Wittmann is a multi-award-winning digital human pioneer, and innovator with over 19 years of experience in the visual effects industry. Matthias has worked as an animator, supervisor, and developer on groundbreaking digital human projects across features, experiential and special programs at Digital Domain, where he has been an integral part of the team since 2004. Matthias brings his work a unique blend of artistic and technological expertise, including extensive body capture experience and deep knowledge of developing believable interactive autonomous virtual humans in real-time engines. Matthias’ work has garnered recognition from the industry, including a Visual Effects Society award for “Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Motion Picture” for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” a Grand Clio for “Virtual 2Pac – Coachella”, and a VES nomination for the character Thistlewit in “Maleficent.” In 2014, Matthias briefly left Digital Domain to explore his passion for real-time engines. He worked on creating interactive virtual celebrities for augmented reality and highly detailed interactive virtual humans for VR, first with MPC and later with Method EXP. Matthias returned to Digital Domain in 2019 to join the Digital Human Group and New Media department as a VFX Supervisor. In this role, he applies his skills to the development of the most advanced autonomous virtual human in the world, Zoey, utilizing Digital Domain’s proprietary tools and his extensive knowledge of Unreal Engine. Additionally, Matthias supervises projects involving interactive digital humans and is responsible for overseeing facial capture and scanning for features, episodic and more. Most recently, Matthias oversaw the facial scanning of actors for Supermassive Games’ and 2 K’s The Quarry, Tatiana Maslany (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) and Corey Stoll (Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania). Despite his passion for art and a master in the arts of Kung Fu, Wing Chun, and Krav Maga, Matthias is constantly pushing the envelope in his field by embracing new and emerging technologies with the goal of creating life-like behaviors and appearances for digital humans. Matthias’ role at Digital Domain is integral to the company’s mission of making the impossible possible.


Travis Cloyd is currently the Global Futurist and Senior Fellow at Thunderbird School of Global Management (#1 masters in management program in world) apart of Arizona State University (#1 most innovative university in the country) his former alumni. He was previously the inaugural Futurist in Residence at FIU (Florida International University). He is also a Professor of Practice at Thunderbird and Adjunct Professor and the Director of iSTAR (Immersive Studio for Altered Reality) within CARTA (College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts) at FIU. On the enterprise side he is a executive with a focus on innovation, digital media and the blockchain. He is the CEO of WXR (Worldwide XR) based in Los Angeles and Miami. A partner company to industry leading licensing agency CMG (Celebrity Management Group). He is a member of the PGA (Producers Guild of America) where he is on the new media council. He is on the VRARA (Virtual Reality Augmented Reality Association) and ambassador to the GBBC (Global Blockchain Business Council). An award-winning producer and 2018 Visionary of the Year at Cinequest in Silicon Valley. He is a tech entrepreneur who is recognized in the top 250 on the Forbes 2021 Next 1000 Entrepreneurs list. He’s created immersive content for major international studios, iconic brands, legendary actors, global musicians, top athletes and historical figures over the last two decades. Currently, breaking new ground leading the industry in developing, producing and licensing experiential content. Focused on future technologies around AI, Machine Learning, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality, Spatial Computing, Blockchain and Gaming. Ranging from developing 3D digital humans surrounding famous people like Jackie Robinson and James Dean to creating XR experiences with today’s major superstars, like NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes. He's been a leading future tech advocate, speaker and industry expert whose point of view is frequently sought by top media outlets and been quoted in Forbes, BBC, TechCrunch, VentureBeat, Wareable, Variety, Deadline, Hollywood Reporter, CNBC over the years. He sits on many advisory boards, impact committees and spends his free time exploring next level innovation that extends the boundaries of content engagement.
