Protection & Monetization of IP in a Generative AI Universe: Developing Software Strategies

While it may be difficult to see any opportunities while sitting in the “Eye of the AI Hurricane,” after all, economic control of IP, from established brands, Personal and Fictional Identity and creation is at stake. However, the platform wars in the entertainment industry have been ongoing for generations now, and AI Innovation, like all the others will likely reveal many scalable monetization opportunities, some obvious, some yet to be discovered. Is there a way to use AI technology as a secret weapon against the AI invasion itself? This session will open the door to a very interesting and controversial discussion.

Chris Wlach is the General Counsel at Huge, a creative consultancy owned by the Interpublic Group of Companies, Inc. Before moving in-house, he focused on complex commercial litigation at Arnold & Porter. He is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US) through the International Association of Privacy Professionals. He also chairs the board of HEART, a humane education nonprofit. Additionally, Chris actively contributes to various publications, including most recently, ACC Docket, that delve into the complexities and implications of AI regulations, data responsibility, privacy, and related subjects.


Joanna Popper was the Chief Metaverse Officer at leading entertainment and sports agency Creative Artists Agency (CAA). Based in Los Angeles, Popper led emerging technology and metaverse initiatives for the agency and its clients. Popper joined CAA in 2022 from HP, where she led its XR initiatives for Go-To-Market, overseeing the launch of award-winning technology, such as the HP Reverb G2 VR headset (winner of Red Dot Design Award, CES Innovation Award, IF Design Award) and HP Reverb G2 Omnicept Edition (winner of VR Hardware of the Year, Entertainment Technology Lumiere Award, Red Dot Best of the Best, CES Innovation Award, IF Design Award). While leading HP’s VR go-to-market, the business grew 10x to a multi-million dollar business. Previously, she was Executive Vice President of Media & Marketing at Singularity University, a NASA-based, Google-backed organization founded by Ray Kurzweil and Peter Diamandis to train leaders on the future of technology including artificial intelligence, VR/AR, robotics, blockchain, and digital biology. She was also the Vice President of Marketing at NBCUniversal, where she worked across properties, including television, film, digital, and parks, and launched top-rated hits in primetime, music award shows, sports, news, daytime, and more for Telemundo. She started her career as an investment banker in New York and Brazil and then a consultant at McKinsey & Company. She served as Executive Producer on BREONNA’S GARDEN, FINDING PANDORA X, and FIGHT BACK, the award-winning immersive content, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, and SXSW. FINDING PANDORA X won Venice’s Golden Lion for Best Immersive Experience and SXSW’s best Virtual Cinema Award. BREONNA’s GARDEN received awards and recognition for social impact from PGA Innovation, Unity, Auggie, Filmgate, and Aurea. FIGHT BACK won an audience award at Venice. She was selected as “50 Women Can Change the World in Media and Entertainment,” ”25 Pioneers in the Metaverse,” “Top 50 Original Thinkers in VR,” “Top Women in Media: Game Changers,” “Top Women in Media: Industry Leaders,” “Digital It List,” and “101 Women Leading the VR Industry.” She has sat on numerous boards and in advisory roles including as Metaphysic Board Observer, the Coalition for the Women in XR Fund, Unity Charitable Fund Advisory Board, Vidcon Industry Advisory Board, AIXR Steering Committee and CES Consumer Technology Association AR/VR Working Committee. Popper graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor’s degree, and The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania with an MBA. 


Hyperreal.io CEO and Chief Architect, Remington Scott, is known for his work on Academy Award winning VFX for blockbuster films and the biggest selling video games. His achievements include creating Gollum / Sméagol for Peter Jackson’s The Lord Of The Rings trilogy; he created the first photo-real digital humans in film for the Academy Award-winning VFX for Spider-Man 2; and the first motion captured theatrical feature film. Scott was named to The Wrap’s 2022 “Innovators List” for, among other efforts, “giving the Metaverse a soul.”  He is currently building the platform for ownership of digital identities of the worlds most recognized celebrities to monetize across Ai opportunities.


Dade Orgeron, Vice President, 3D Innovation, Shutterstock: Dade Orgeron has been building virtual worlds for over 25 years. He has worked as a 3D Designer, Art Director, Creative Director, 3D Director and mentor - helping 3D artists hone the skills they need to become masters of their craft. In 2013, Dade joined TurboSquid to help build and curate the world’s largest 3D content library and to bring 3D models to an even wider audience of non-3D users. Since then, his focus has been to simplify the overtly technical challenges facing 3D artists by developing standards, tools, and training that allow artists to focus more on the creative side of 3D content creation. Now at Shutterstock, his vision for feeding content to the Metaverse gains even sharper focus as he looks toward harnessing AI and ML technologies to help 3D content creators build, conform, manage, and distribute their 3D content. Dade is based in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Martin Clancy is an IRC Research Fellow at the Center for Digital Humanities, Trinity College Dublin and a renowned Irish musician, academic, and industry consultant. He is the Founder Chair of the IEEE Global AI Ethics Arts Committee. His research on AI in music has been published in the IEEE Journal and has a book by Routledge UK, “Artificial Intelligence and Music Ecosystem”. Martin is a Certified Ableton Live 11 Trainer and has delivered lectures on Ableton, music creativity, and industry practices at esteemed institutions such as KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Queen Mary University of London, and University College Dublin. As a solo recording artist, Martin achieved a series of Top 20 disco hits in the US Billboard Dance Charts during his residency at New York’s Seaport Music Festival from 2009 to 2011. His techno group, Valleraphon, often appears on the Beatport charts. Martin was also a founding member of the Irish group In Tua Nua and had his first song “Take My Hand” featuring Sinead O’Connor, included in the 2022 documentary “Nothing Compares”. Martin is well-regarded in the industry, serving as Jack Lukeman’s manager and working as a consultant to the international music industry. Recent media include The New York Times, Wired, BBC, Irish Times, Daily Mail, Sean Moncrief Show, NoMoreWorkHorse, Dave Fanning 2FM, Hot Press, Daily Mirror, FM104, Daily Star and LifeWire.com.

Johannes Saam, Futurist/Creative Technologist, Framestore/atara.xyz: Senior Creative Technologist / Futurist Johannes Saam took an early interest in 3D, teaching himself critical skills at a young age. He started self-taught, then studied at ScanlineVFX in Munich, and after earning a Master's in Computer Animation from Bournemouth University, he worked in Visual Effects for 15 years. He has worked on feature films, including Mad Max 4, Thor, Captain America, and Prometheus. Since joining Framestore, Johannes has worked on many projects in emerging technology for high-profile partners, including Apple, Google, Time Inc, BMW, and Facebook. He holds a Technical Achievement Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his many achievements and honors for developing, prototyping, and promoting technologies and workflows for deep compositing. As well as an Emmy Award for his contributions to the Free Solo 360 project, he was part of the Platinum Lion-winning team of the 'Long live the Prince' campaign in Cannes. Beyond his numerous awards, Johannes has spoken at various events, most recently SXSW, GDC, Siggraph, and NFT NYC. He is currently researching creative ways to tell stories in all transmedia contexts. He profoundly understands machine learning technologies and focuses on discovering new avenues to excite audiences globally. Johannes is also known under the artist pseudonym 'ATARA'; His first NFT collection used generative art rooted in the blockchain. It sold out, and he is continuously expanding his presence as a web3 Creative. Most recently, Atara created Jeff the artist, a virtual being in the web3 space. And made the Dalle-Punks a unique and AI-created NFT project. Johannes is also an advisor for Luxy.io and several NFT projects.
