Track II:
The TV and Set-top as the Consumer Gateway to Entertainment & Information – Set-Top, HD, Broadband, Guides & PVRs
While there will always be a few holdouts, the trinity of the TV, the couch potato and the TV remote is about to go the way of the horse and buggy. The combination of the TV, the set-top, the broadband connection and video recorder is about to break down the barriers of TV viewing. As the 50" flat screen TV saturates the consumer landscape, the idea of windowing screens on a TV set may not be that far way. The idea that consumers might use a TV as they do a computer may be right around the corner. In the near future, viewers might be watching a football game and at the same time, on a second window on the TV, that viewer might also be shopping for tank-tops or buying snacks from the supermarket. That viewer might be taping a show, watching a movie and doing research for a term paper on the web at the same time. The TV set will serve as gateway to entertainment and information as sure as the computer opens the door to a world of information. TV, interactive TV, IPTV, PVR TV, broadband based TV, there will likely be as many ways to describe the way consumers will use and access content and programming as there are companies supplying the options. In this session we will explore that coming future.

David Wood is Head of New Technology in the Technical Department, EBU: David Wood is a man with several hats – which he says is useful when you are losing your hair . . . He works in the Technical Department where he is Head of New Technology. He also has a second role working for the Secretary General as Head of New Media – a task bestowed on him by the Administrative Council in May 2002. "I suppose my problem is that I understand a bit of everything," David explains. "I studied electronics and the Arts, and my career has taken me from doing some radio and television in my twenties – when I didn't look and sound so weathered – to working in technical research and development, planning and installation, and publications. I came to the EBU after I exhausted all the UK broadcasters [having worked for the BBC and the Independent Broadcasting Authority]. Thanks to the EBU I was lucky enough to be sent to the Harvard Business School some years ago. "I have been with the EBU since the Technical Department was in Brussels – 20 years or so – and I really like it. I feel our work, and that of our Members, is making a difference to society, and that we are lucky to be able to do that. At one stage, when I was young, I thought I had a career as a rock musician. But there was just one small problem: I was rubbish. I have been trying to find something I was good at ever since. "I help to coordinate across the groups of the Technical Committee, and also work in a couple of specific areas – such as the way in which new types of home receivers ('flat panels') will affect the kind of services our Members' need to provide. "Jean Stock's notion is that, more and more, we need to take into account all the dimensions – technical, economic, content – in the work we do at the EBU. His term for this is 'transversal'. In a sense, I am a bit of a guinea pig: the work as Head of New Media is about getting people in-house who work in multimedia, regardless of which departments they find themselves in, to work together and learn from each other. The aim is for the EBU to become a 'centre of excellence' for new media. "I am also a bit of a freak about two areas – high-definition television and 3-D systems. I absolutely love them both and if I could I would get our Members to broadcast them tomorrow . . . but money and common sense get in the way!" David has some advice if you want to curl up with a good book on a cold winter's night: "Try the 'Report of the EBU Digital Strategy Group', into which Lina Vanberghem and I have invested blood, sweat, and tears."

Michael Philpott, Principal Analyst, Ovum: Michael Philpott is a principal analyst specialising in broadband access technologies and next generation networks. Michael is also manager of Ovum's Broadband@Ovum team and is responsible for all of Ovum's broadband access research. Michael is well known on the conference circuit, providing his analytical view on broadband markets and technologies on behalf of Ovum or its clients. Michael joined Ovum in September 2000 as a consultant in the Networks and Infrastructure team. During his time with the team he managed several consulting projects for leading telecommunication operators, equipment vendors, large utility companies and financial institutions. During 2003 Michael served as the manager of the Broadband@Ovum service. During this time he produced forecasts and reports on a number of access topics, mainly focusing on the technology and strategy side of the business. In 2004 Michael set up Ovum's new Telecommunications Technology group. His first research assignments in this group looked at the areas of delivering high-quality video over DSL networks and migration of PSTN to IP. With the technology group successfully up and running Michael has now moved back into the broadband group where he has recently been exploring the technical issues of providing broadband value added services to multiple devices within the home. Before joining Ovum Michael spent four years with BT Laboratories designing next-generation access networks.
