And that is the job of the DRM technology industry, to make the film, music and mobile technology delivery systems safe for mass use. In this session, we will explore, from the point of view of the technology companies, the possibilities and potential of DRM in the evolving content landscape. Oliver Mills. General Manager, EMEA, Intertrust Technologies: Oliver Mills is General Manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa for Intertrust Technologies Corporation. Prior to Intertrust, Mr. Mills worked at Vidiator and Nextreaming, where he was responsible for developing cutting-edge technologies to encode and stream multimedia to wireless devices. Mr. Mills also served as director of Sales for Intertrust. Before joining Intertrust he worked in the computer security, network management, and anti-virus marketplace for more than 15 years, acting as an agent and consultant for such companies as McAfee Associates, Axent Technologies Inc, Compaq, Novell, Mergent International, Intrusion Detection Inc, Quarterdeck, Security Dynamics, and Network Associates. Prior to that Mr. Mills worked in the entertainment industry, where he promoted and managed various groups for Riva Records, Stiff Records, Phonogram Records, and Epic/Sony.
Jim C. Williams, Senior Vice President & Chief Technology Officer, Motion Picture Association of America, Inc (MPAA): Jim Williams leads the Office of Technology for the Motion Picture Association of America, Inc (MPAA) in its efforts to facilitate a smooth digital transition that provides consumers new ways to enjoy Hollywood content when, where and how they want. Jim works closely with the six major motion picture studios to advance movie and television producers interests throughout the world in various technology-related capacities, including content protection license negotiation, license enforcement, industry relations, government relations, pro-technology public outreach and standardization. Jim joined the MPAA in 2002. Prior to joining the MPAA, Jim spent nearly 20 years with Hughes/DIRECTV, advancing from a skilled hardware, software and chip designer to a seasoned entertainment executive responsible for up to 300 employees and up to 70 development engineers. In 1997, he led the business startup of DIRECTV Japan, the fastest full-scale Direct Broadcast Satellite startup in history. In 1998, he led the launch team for the first U.S. nationwide HDTV service. Starting in 1999, Jim led the DIRECTV set-top box development team. Jim holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Master of Science degree in Computer Engineering from California State University, Long Beach. Jim holds thirteen (13) U.S. patents with another seven (7) U.S. patents pending. Jim has won six (6) Technology and Engineering & Advanced Media Technology Emmy Awards as part of various engineering teams. Jim serves on the Board of Directors of Mastermedia International. Jim is a prolific public speaker and author, having delivered over fifty addresses on five continents.
Stuart Rosove, VP, Media & Entertainment: With more than 17 years of experience in technology management and market development, Rosove is responsible for content identification and related IP and technology for the Media & Entertainment Industry as Vice President, Media & Entertainment at Digimarc Corporation. He works closely with Digimarc licensees to further promote the adoption of digital watermarking for managing, protecting and enhancing digital content. Prior to joining Digimarc, Rosove was president and CEO of Activated Content Corp., a leading supplier of digital watermarking solutions to the music industry. Rosove was CEO of AudioTrack Watermark Solutions Corp. and was founder and CEO of Sequel Technology Corp. In 1996, Rosove was ranked as the 43rd top CEO by Washington CEO Magazine. He has held senior management positions at Delrina Corp. and QNX Software and was a founding partner of Rosove Gerb & Associates. Rosove holds a Bachelors Degree in Journalism from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada and a Bachelors Degree in English from the University of Manitoba in Canada.
Josh Kline, President & CEO, Secure Path: Josh is a digital media industry veteran who founded Secure Path Technology in 2005 and serves as President & CEO. As the former CEO of Sample Digital and COO of that companys predecessor SampleReels.com Josh created the Digital Dailies system in use at many of the major studios and expanded its client base to include Universal, Disney, Sony, Warner Brothers, Paramount, New Line, Bad Robot, NetFlix, Movielink, CinemaNow and Technicolor. Josh amassed significant experience across numerous entertainment-related disciplines, including work for ICM, feature production at Paramount Pictures, commercial production at HSI, Pytka and Radical Media, and worked as an independent producer and writer before transitioning to technology as a New Media Consultant for the Holiday Inn Corporation.
Steve Oetegenn, Chief Sales & Marketing Officer, Verimatrix: Steve Oetegenn's career in the Information Technology industry spans 25 years. He has a wide range of experience in international business, having launched numerous high tech products to the global marketplace. He began his career with Burroughs Corporation (now UNISYS) as a specialist for Optical Character Recognition Systems. He has specialized in Digital Security and Anti-Piracy since 1998, working with government agencies, Fortune 500 companies and major Hollywood studios. Prior to joining Verimatrix, He was COO of MediaSec Technologies LLC, a pioneer and leader in the field of digital watermarking, COO of Argus Systems Group, a leading provider of Internet server security software, and CEO of DCE Communication Ltd, a world wide provider of business messaging systems. Mr. Oetegenn has spoken at numerous global digital security conferences and speaks fluent German.
Gabriel M. Ramsey, Associate, Orrick: Gabriel M. Ramsey, an associate in the Silicon Valley office and a member of the Intellectual Property Group, focuses his practice on intellectual property litigation. He has experience in high technology and entertainment related matters involving copyright, trademark, trade secret and patent law. He also has experience in licensing matters and general commercial disputes. Mr. Ramsey has represented Lucasfilm, Ltd., Lucas Digital Ltd., LucasArts Entertainment Co., CNET Networks, Inc., Universal Studios, The Walt Disney Company, Fox Entertainment Group, Fox Broadcasting, eHarmony.com, VideoEgg.com, Affinity Circles, Inc., Gracenote, Inc., Digidesign, Mesa/Boogie, Ltd., Pioneer Corp. and Microsoft Corp.
Donald E. Leake, Program Director for Copy Protection Business Development, IBM Research Division: Don Leake brings over 35 years of IBM experience in the IT industry to his current position of program director for copy protection business development, IBM Research Division. Leake is responsible for promoting the use of IBMs extensive portfolio of content protection technologies in IBMs products and industry initiatives as the use of rich digital media becomes pervasive in entertainment and IT applications. IBMs content protection technologies include encryption, watermarking, fingerprinting and software tamper resistance. Leake also works closely with the Media and Entertainment Industry, in its transition to digital, through his participation in standards organizations, consortia, alliances and multi-company working relationships. As such, Leake is currently the lead IBM representative to the 4C group, AACS, the Copy Protection Technical Working Group, Digital Living Network Alliance, the DVD Forum and the Pro-MPEG Forum. Previously, Leake managed the marketing, sales and customer support functions for the group in IBM Microelectronics Division that develops MPEG and set top box chips. In this role, Leake was responsible for establishing IBM leadership in the digital media chip business. Prior to that, Mr. Leake held a number of marketing and product planning management positions in IBMs high-end and mid-range systems development organizations, including managing product planning for IBMs largest commercial servers. Mr. Leake started his IBM career as a customer support rep in the field sales organization. Mr. Leake holds a Batchelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Masters of Science degree in Statistics, both from Penn State University.
David E. Leibowitz, Managing Partner,CH POTOMAC: a strategic services firm working with companies at the intersection of entertainment, media and technology. Mr. Leibowitz brings almost thirty years of experience in business, law and policy issues facing the entertainment, new media, consumer electronics and information technology industries. Among other activities, Mr. Leibowitz serves as a senior advisor to Gotuit Media, Motorola, National Datacast, Gibson Guitar, Peppercoin, myMPO, and Demand ID Systems. Mr. Leibowitz also has worked with other clients, including BMI, 13 Colonies Software (since purchased by a large enterprise software company), CD Intelligence, and Neurok Optics. Earlier in his career, Mr. Leibowitz Co-Founded VERANCE and served as it Chairman. VERANCE offers innovative technology solutions to protect, manage, and monitor audio and audiovisual content, including broadcast monitoring and verification, copy protection and content management. Before that, Mr. Leibowitz was Executive Vice President and General Counsel of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), responsible for business and legal issues facing the industry with particular emphasis on how to position the industry to utilize new physical and electronic format systems. During this period, Mr. Leibowitz chaired the worldwide recording industrys International Steering Committee on DVD Audio, the RIAA New Technology and Multimedia Committee and the RIAA Legal Committee. Prior to his work at the RIAA, Mr. Leibowitz was a partner in the Washington, D.C., law firm Wiley Rein & Fielding representing a number of Fortune 100 media and entertainment companies. Mr. Leibowitz also has served as Policy Planning Advisor to the Register of Copyrights for the U.S. Copyright Office.
