Track II - DH15 - Digital Hollywood The Personalized Web; The Personalized Application; Personalized Television; Personalized Social Experience The personalized experience, whether via mobile, social networks, broadband or video, more and more is how a consumer relates to the communications experience. All content via all platforms must conform to this understanding of how the entertainment, information and communications experience is defined. The broadcast, one to many, communications model is slowly being relegated to a special occasion while the everyday consumer lifestyle is dominated by personalization. All providers in the media and electronics food-chain, from hardware and network provider to the software, advertising and content companies are continually refining and enhancing personalization. Brian Balfour, Founder and Vice President of Product, Viximo: Brian Balfour is a serial entrepreneur and online community visionary. At 25 years old his latest endeavor, Viximo, is a well funded mass market start-up focusing on digital goods. Brian founded Viximo in August 2007 and, as VP of Product, he has lead the creation of the first and only complete platform for digital goods that connects premium-content designers, brands and online and mobile publishers. A 2005 graduate of The University of Michigan, Brian founded multiple companies starting at an early age. Celestine Inc. was Brians first venture at the tender age of 19 and sparked his interest in online communities and social networking. Celestine Inc was responsible for creating one of the first college specific social networking sites pre-Facebook and pre-Myspace. Growing a solid base of users in only a few months, Celestine served as Brians biggest stepping stone in his professional life. Seeing how Celestine Inc, Facebook and other prominent social networks impacted the social connections of college students and others in a short period of time, Brians passion for online communities quickly cultivated Brians blog, SocialDegree.com. With SocialDegree Brian discussed in depth about how to build, grow and monetize an online community. As his blog gained recognition, new ideas and opportunities poured in until an ambitious startup, ZoomInfo, brought Brian to Boston. Brian served as a product manager for ZoomInfo, a company aimed at building the next generation business information resource. Soon after, Brian started consulting for local community based Internet start-ups and joined a group of other young entrepreneurs who founded Betahouse, a co-working space located in the heart of Cambridge, MA. Betahouse became a hub for those who want to procure and grow their ideas in a collaborative, fun environment and became the catalyst that brought together Viximo. Brian observed some of the Asian online communities and their unique business models. Scratching the surface away he quickly realized there was a massive world of consumer activity among virtual goods online at places like TenCent, Habbo Hotel, Gaia Online, and more. Realizing that virtual goods were a more compelling way to monetize online communities than traditional online advertising, the opportunity became clear. Brian quickly uncovered the pain points in the market; the need for more goods, the need for better goods, the need for an economy and the massive desire from brands to get involved. Viximos digital goods platform ties all of those pain points together. Brian found rapid connections and secured funding for the idea in a matter of weeks. Outside of Viximo Brian spends a lot of time advising other young entrepreneurs and contributing to the Boston tech community. He runs PopSignal, an organizational outlet and online hub to serve the social demand of the Boston tech community.
