And while there were always the naysayer, predicting such gems such as the end of Hollywood with the invention of TV or that cable would doom the TV industry, the entertainment industry has more durable than they could have ever suspected. In fact, with the coming of new technologies, the entertainment and media industries has emerged as a global powerhouse. And the more things change, the more they stay the same. Entertainment and media are being challenged once again - Hollywood 2.0 is now upon us with an entirely new set of technologies with new rules of engagement. Phil Ressler, Vice President, Clearstone Venture Partners: Phil joined Clearstone in 2003 to provide operating perspective on investment evaluations, decisions and guidance of portfolio companies. Phil has been engaged in building businesses in technology, consumer electronics and advertising sectors since 1979, including 16 years in executive and management positions in software and Internet companies. His technology career is comprised of executive marketing positions in raw start-up, growth-stage and public companies ranging from pre-product, pre-revenue to billion-dollar environments. Phil has been part of executive teams that raised over $100 million in capital for growth companies and he has created market demand for well over $600 million in incremental new product sales in the software sector, in addition to sustaining base revenues. Whether in turn-around or start-up efforts, throughout his career Phil has propelled early-stage and established companies into mainstream acceptance and revenue growth for groundbreaking product innovations, including object-oriented development tools, enterprise client/server tools and databases, collaborative groupware, software change management, Internet and enterprise business performance applications. His technology career includes executive positions at Nantucket Corporation, Lotus, Gupta, Continuus Software, inquiry.com and Callidus Software.
Brett Close, President & CEO, 38 Studios: Brett Close is a video game industry veteran with more than a decade of experience delivering highly successful entertainment products and leading multi-disciplinary teams of engineers, artists, game designers, and audio experts. Brett most recently served as the general manager and production director of Midway Games Austin, TX game development studio where he oversaw global production as well as managed the studios game teams on the BlackSite: Area51 and NightCaster product lines. Brett is an expert in the intersection of technology, game design, and software development after having held a number of technical and managerial roles in the software industry. Earlier in his career as a development director at Electronic Arts, Brett was responsible for all technical aspects of development and production for the award winning Medal of Honor game franchise, based out of EAs Los Angeles studio. He honed his skills at Devils Thumb / VR-1 / Jaleco Entertainment in Boulder, Colorado, where he began his game career as a software engineer and technical director, and quickly worked his way up to senior producer for the NightCaster Xbox launch, and eventually became general manager of the Boulder studio. Brett holds a masters degree in electrical engineering and computer science as well as a bachelors degree in chemistry from the University of Kansas. He also studied philosophy and chemistry at Universität Dortmund in Germany. An avid athlete, musician, and environmentalist, Brett is a respected industry leader known for both encouraging and establishing a true work-life balance in the game development environment.
Brent Weinstein, CEO, 60Frames Entertainment: Brent Weinstein is CEO and one of the key architects of 60Frames Entertainment, the innovative, Beverly Hills-based financing, ad sales and syndication company for professional artists to create and monetize original online content. Prior to 60Frames, Weinstein was head of Digital Media at leading Hollywood talent and literary agency UTA, where he helped form the department in 2004 to oversee the agencys digital practice areas, including broadband, video games and mobile entertainment. Weinstein led the dept.s team of dedicated digital media agents to identify and evaluate opportunities for UTA clients: actors, writers, directors, producers, and recording artists, in addition to many business-to-business and consumer-oriented technology and corporate clients. Weinstein, with UTA co-founder and partner Jeremy Zimmer, also formed UTAOnline (www.utaonline.net), a dedicated broadband division that finds and represents the next generation of web-based content artists. Launched in October 2006, UTAOnline is the first of its kind among major talent agencies. During his tenure at UTA, Weinstein made digital media deals for many of the best known artists in entertainment, including Johnny Depp, Jack Black, Jim Carrey, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, as well as top digital media artists such as Big Fantastic (Prom Queen), AskANinja (askaninja.com), and others. Prior to joining UTA in 2001, Weinstein practiced corporate and business litigation in Los Angeles and Irvine, California. He is a graduate of the University of Southern California, where he earned a Bachelors degree in Business Administration, and the University of San Diego School of Law. He is married and lives in Los Angeles.
Javier Saralegui, founding President , Univision Online: As founding President of Univision Online, Javier Saralegui oversaw the launch of Univision.com, the number one most visited Spanish-language website in the U.S. since 2000; and of Univision Móvil, the leading Spanish-language mobile content and video platform. In this role, Mr. Saralegui oversees the companys original online and wireless content strategies, including e-commerce and related joint ventures. In the last two years, Univision.com and Univision Móvil received 34 Promax/BDA North America and Latina America Awards for excellence in Marketing, Promotions and Design in electronic media. Prior to working at Univision Online, Mr. Saralegui was the President of Galavisión, the leading cable network for U.S. Hispanics, where he was responsible for managing day-to-day operations of the network. As President, he quintupled Galavisións distribution and revenues making Galavisión the leader in Spanish-language cable, a position the network still holds today. Prior to joining Univision, Mr. Saralegui worked as a Sales Director for Más Magazine, where he was instrumental in driving ad sales revenues and making it the top billing Spanish-language magazine in the United States. Mr. Saralegui holds a B.S. in Economics from Hobart College. He resides in Manhattan, with his wife and three children
Louis A. Toth, Managing Director, Comcast Interactive Capital: Louis oversees the investing activities at CIC and is responsible for evaluating investment opportunities, coordinating due diligence efforts and assisting in the negotiation and structuring of financial terms for new portfolio investments. He also works with the management of CIC portfolio companies on strategic, business development and operations issues. In addition, Louis collaborates with the various business units of Comcast on issues relating to new services, technologies and start-ups. Previously, Louis worked in investment banking and at a venture capital firm focused on technology and communications services. Louis graduated with honors and holds a MBA from The Wharton School and a MA in International Studies from the Joseph H. Lauder Institute of Management & International Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He also graduated from the Management & Technology Program at the University of Pennsylvania with a BS in Economics from The Wharton School and a BS in Materials Science & Engineering from the School of Engineering & Applied Science. Louis is involved as a Director, Board Observer or adviser for BroadLogic Network Technologies, Cartiza, Cedar Point Communications, Jingle Networks, Ortiva Wireless, RGB Networks, StrataLight Communications, and Vitrue.
Allison Goldberg, Executive Director, Time Warner Investments: Allison is an Executive Director with Time Warner Investments, where she is focused on equity investments in companies that directly enhance Time Warner's ability to meet specific strategic goals, including the delivery of new services, enhancement of an existing product, entry or expansion into a key strategic market, completion of a strategic partnership, and critical research and development. Prior to joining Time Warner in July 2001, Allison was an Associate at Groupe Arnault, investing in and managing new media and technology equity investments for the private holding company of the Chairman of LVMH. Previously, she worked in the Global Media Group, Investment Banking at Morgan Stanley where she worked on transactions for Time Warner, Viacom and Liberty Media. Allison serves as an active observer on the boards of several portfolio companies including Adify, Trion World Networks, Waterfront Media, Ripe Digital Entertainment and SiTV, and currently serves on the board of the New York Private Equity Network (NYPEN). She also co-founded the NYPEN Womens Forum. Allison graduated from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Economics.
Daniel P. Harris, Chairman & CEO, MEDIAPASS Network: Mr. Harris has been at the forefront of Digital Lifestyle for nearly 10 years. After the .com bubble burst, Mr. Harris saw a unique opportunity to connect with Gen Y X audiences through online music. Prior to founding MediaPass Network <http://www.mediapassnetwork.net>, Daniel has long been an early adopter and industry trendsetter in the areas of technology, content, and community. Daniel was part of the team that released Madonnas 1st approved download on the Internet and later secured the rights and exclusively distributed Internet video webcasts for the most coveted independent live events throughout North America and Europe. Daniel has produced and or distributed hundreds of individual live-on-demand webcasts plus numerous marquee live events including: 2002 2003 2004 American Dance Music Awards, 2001 2002 2003 Ultra Music Festival, UKs MOBO Awards, Farm Aid, and Voodoo Festival. This lifestyle credibility resulted in MediaPass Network being selected by Microsoft Corporation to participate in the Beta Launch of Windows Media 9 Series in September 2002, serve as the national press launch partner for the Portable Media Center in 2005, and serve as a windows vista beta partner in 2006. Previously, Mr. Harris operated his own production company where he initiated business relationships and executed licensing agreements with clients including: Adidas, ABC Sports, CNNSI, and Fox Sports World. During this time, Mr. Harris was a Brandon Tartikoff Award Finalist (top industry new comer) in each of his two years of eligibility. Prior to relocating to Los Angeles in 1996, Daniel was Co-General Manager of the New Orleans A League Professional Soccer Franchise where he tripled revenue and doubled attendance each season. Daniel managed all media partnerships, community outreach programs, and key accounts including: Coca Cola, Cox Cable, Gatorade, Pizza Hut, Snickers Brand, and WWL Radio. A native of Washington DC, Mr. Harris holds a B.S. Degree in Marketing from Loyola University of New Orleans.
