DRM Implementation in Media and Entertainment: From Standardization to Implementation of New Technology Strategies
Content is what the entertainment and media industry produce, and the viability of the industrys future rests on its ability to manage its content and control its distribution while at the same time making it available to an ever larger customer base. And that is the job of the DRM technology industry, to make the film, music and mobile technology delivery systems safe for mass use. In this session, we will explore, from the point of view of the technology companies, the possibilities and potential of DRM in the evolving content landscape. From CDs and DVDs to broadband and wireless delivery, DRM and content protection represents the bottom line of the future of our industries.

Mark Isherwood, Director and co-founder, Rightscom Ltd: Mark spent 18 years working for the MCPS-PRS Alliance, the UK music rights collecting society and one of the biggest in the world, in senior management positions. He was responsible for the development of strategies and policies for substantial rights negotiations with a range of licensee industries, including all the major UK television and radio broadcasters and the video industry. From the mid-1990s, as Director of New Technology, he was responsible for the gathering of knowledge concerning rights-related new technology developments worldwide. This high profile role led to participation in the UK Cabinet Office Performance and Innovation Unit Study which set out the UK Governments e-commerce agenda. Since helping to establish Rightscom, Mark has undertaken rights acquisition negotiations for a major pan-European broadcaster and acted as advisor on digital rights management technology and functionality for British Music Rights. He has worked with Sony BMG Music Entertainment in the analysis of their system requirements in the management of digital music and participated in a project for the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) examining the intellectual property rights (IPR) consequences of using Creative Commons licences in the HE and FE sectors. He is currently the lead consultant for Rightscom in the support of DDEX, an organisation developing standard XML messages and other supporting standards for the exchange of information relating to the management of digital music content and rights.
Steve Oetegenn, Chief Sales & Marketing Officer, Verimatrix: Steve Oetegenn's car eer in the Information Technology industry spans 25 years. He has a wide range of experience in international business, having launched numerous high tech products to the global marketplace. He began his career with Burroughs Corporation (now UNISYS) as a specialist for Optical Character Recognition Systems. He has specialized in Digital Security and Anti-Piracy since 1998, working with government agencies, Fortune 500 companies and major Hollywood studios. Prior to joining Verimatrix, He was COO of MediaSec Technologies LLC, a pioneer and leader in the field of digital watermarking, COO of Argus Systems Group, a leading provider of Internet server security software, and CEO of DCE Communication Ltd, a world wide provider of business messaging systems. Mr. Oetegenn has spoken at numerous global digital security conferences and speaks fluent German.
Andy Nobbs, President and Managing Director, Teletrax: In 2002, Andy Nobbs le d the team that launched Teletrax (TM), the world's first and only global video watermarking service that has been lauded as one of the most revolutionary television industry innovations in recent years. Teletrax, a joint venture between U.S.-based Medialink Worldwide Incorporated and Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands, offers a unique solution that helps content providers such as motion picture studios, TV sports and entertainment program producers and distributors, news organizations and advertisers determine ROI from broadcast verification of airings for network and syndicated programming, evaluation of video news reach and performance, and proof-of-performance of advertising buys. Nobbs oversees all aspects of Teletrax's day-to-day activities around the world including strategy management, business development, global operations and marketing. Under Nobbs' stewardship, Teletrax has rapidly expanded its global monitoring network to nearly 50 nations with more than 1000 channels currently tracked around the world. Leading entertainment, news and media organizations that have signed contracts with Teletrax include Tribune Entertainment, Universal Domestic Television, ABC, Buena Vista, BBC, Reuters Television, NBC News Channel and Media Review International. Nobbs was formerly Content Director at IPC Media, the United Kingdom's largest consumer magazine publisher, which was later sold to AOL Time Warner. At IPC Media, his brief was to accelerate revenue growth of IPC's intellectual properties. Nobbs has previously held executive positions at Emap PLC, Granada Television and ECN. A frequent speaker on the subject of worldwide digital rights and content management, Nobbs has participated in major panel discussions around the world at conferences including Digital Hollywood, Association of International Broadcasters, Broadcasting Engineering India and Broadcast Asia. He has also appeared on television on CNBC, in the print in the Financial Times, The Hollywood Reporter, Television Week and Commonwealth Broadcaster.
Shawn Ambwani, Vice President, Licensing and Business Development, Intertrust Technologies, Inc.: Previously, he was executive vice president at Nextreaming where he managed their platform division. He also co-founded Envivio, which was spun off from France Telecom in 1999 to develop MPEG-4 streaming solutions for the broadcast, cable network, and content developer markets. At France Telecom, he conceived and led international teams in the development of Internet services in France and in the US. He has a Math degree from UCLA and JD/MBA from Boston University. He is a member of the California Bar. Marlin is a community based DRM standard used worldwide in multimedia devices and services. Based on open standards, Marlin specifications support broadband, broadcast/IPTV and mobile services. Marlin now comprises 31 companies in addition to the founding members (Intertrust, Sony, Philips, Panasonic and Samsung). These include almost all major consumer electronic and mobile device companies, several of the major service providers, and all major DRM companies.
Donald Wong, VP & CTO Digital Media, EMC: Donald Wong leads the deve lopment and execution of EMC's vision and growth strategy in digital media. In this role, he is also responsible for identifying product, partnership and acquisition opportunities in this rapidly evolving and growing market. Previously, Wong was VP of Sony Pictures' Digital Media Group where he was charged with the research, development and deployment of digital media technologies, infrastructure and workflows serving all lines of business. He has extensive experience working across the entertainment value-chain, from business affairs, production, marketing, sales, fulfillment, and anti-piracy. Prior to joining Sony, he held management and technical consulting positions at Deloitte Consulting, ABB Asea Brown Boveri, and General Electrics highly respected Corporate Audit Staff. Donald holds a B.S. in Civil & Environmental Engineering from Cornell University, and an MBA from the Anderson School of Management at UCLA ('96).
Josette Bonte, Chief Digital Media Strategist, Cisco: Jose tte Bonte has more than 20 years experience at the confluence of the media and telecommunications industries. For 12 years, she worked in the film and television production and distribution industries, and spent 10 years in new media and telecommunications, where she was at the forefront of introductions of content distribution by both wireline and satellite operators. Josette has served as Executive Director of Unifrance Film, where she represented the French motion picture and television industry in Hollywood. She founded EuroScreen Partners, a film production company. Most recently she served as Senior Vice President, Business Development, for online games company Media Station Inc., where she headed the technology licensing and broadband affiliate relations department. Josette received an M.F.A from the UCLA School of Film and Television and a Ph.D. in Telecommunications and New Media from the Sorbonne.
