Next Generation P2P Music, TV and Film - DRM, Paid for Pass-Along, Ad-Based and Other Legal Distributed Computing Models and the Entertainment Industries
While the debate over legal issues in music and movie distribution of content continues, the P2P and distributed computing industry is making strides in taking its technologies into the mainstream. With many evolving solutions on the way from paid-for-pass-along along with various DRM solutions and advertiser based options - and now an active trade association for P2P exists to enhance the solutions in the marketplace - we are pleased to hold a standalone solution session on the topic. In this session we will attempt to go beyond the legal issues into the practical applications of P2P in the marketplace. P2P advocates make claim to a major share of the market that will play a central force in the future of the music and film industries. In this session, we will hear the case for P2P - understanding it strengths and weaknesses.

Mark Mooradian, Senior Vice President of Business Development and Partner Relations, MediaNet Digital: Mr. Mooradian oversees worldwide business development, marketing, strategy, and partner relations for the company and is responsible for identifying, expanding and managing MediaNet Digital’s global roster of distribution partners. In addition, he is responsible for marketing, strategy and public relations on a global basis. Prior to joining MediaNet, Mr. Mooradian was Vice President and Senior Analyst at Jupiter Media Metrix where he was responsible for music, media and entertainment research from 1995 to 2002. In addition to keynoting and moderating Jupiter and other industry conferences, Mr. Mooradian also managed Plug.In, an international online music conference. Mr. Mooradian was widely quoted as an expert in national publications including The Wall Street Journal, New York Times and BusinessWeek, and television appearances on CNN, CNBC and FoxNews as an analyst at Jupiter. Before becoming Vice President, Mr. Mooradian was group director of Jupiter’s Consumer Content Group, which published research covering the major online services and portals, as well as traditional media and entertainment companies’ online ventures. Previously, Mr. Mooradian came from International Creative Management, where he worked with writers and directors, and raised international financing of client projects. Mr. Mooradian received his BA in Psychology from University of California, San Diego and a joint BA in English and American Literature from University of Kent at Canterbury, England.

John Desmond, Vice President, MediaSentry Services: John Desmond brings to SafeNet a proven record of success throughout his 15 year career in building sales and marketing teams to lead emerging markets and increase shareholder value. In his current role, Mr. Desmond leads the sales, engineering and product development efforts for the company’s anti-piracy services under the MediaSentry brand. He also oversees the development of new business initiatives focused on protecting and enabling legitimate digital distribution for the entertainment and media industries. Previously, Mr. Desmond served as vice president, worldwide sales for Centive where he was instrumental in growing the multi-channel distribution organization from inception to $30 million in revenues and establishing Centive as the global leader in the Enterprise Incentive Management market. Prior to Centive, Mr. Desmond was director, sales and marketing for Quintus Corporation, where he helped transform the company into a leading provider of converged call-center solutions, achieving a $1.8 billion peak market valuation and subsequent acquisition by Avaya. Earlier in his career, Mr. Desmond also held several key management positions with Lotus Development Corporation. He holds a BA in Finance from Drexel University.

George Searle is CEO of LimeWire. Prior to joining LimeWire, he started, acquired, led, built and/or sold a number of new media ventures. George formed Mediaguide as a joint venture with ASCAP, where he developed and implemented an automated tracking system to help ASCAP better monitor, collect, and disburse payments to rights-holders while simultaneously expanding the royalty base. George co-founded ConneXus, where he created a revolutionary service that let consumers identify and purchase music they hear on ordinary radio using only their mobile phone. The service received critical acclaim as an important new e-commerce model for traditional media, entertainment and wireless companies. George orchestrated the acquisition of Swiss-based YES International, which he combined with ConneXus to form YES Networks, whose services make radio and TV interactive and social. As a consultant, George has helped other businesses conceptualize, develop and launch breakthrough technologies, products and business plans for social media, online dating and on-demand software. Prior to his foray into new media, George worked at two DoD think tanks, where he advised the Offices of the Secretary of Defense, US Air Force, and other agencies in the development, acquisition, test and evaluation, launch and operation of various national security satellites. George earned his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University, an MS in Applied Mechanics from Cal Tech, and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.

Robert Levitan is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Pando Networks. Prior to founding Pando, Robert’s fourth start-up, he was the co-founder of iVillage, the largest community website for women; Flooz.com, an online gift currency and corporate rewards company; and YearBook Enterprises, a publisher of video yearbooks for high schools and colleges. Robert was also a strategic marketing advisor for Oddpost, an innovative web-mail service company acquired by Yahoo. He helped Pearson LLC launch a television series in China and AT&T Wireless set up its Internet operating division. Robert also serves on the Board of Directors of Mobius Management Systems, a leading provider of software that supports content intensive e-business applications, the Executive Council of New York, a trade association and industry catalyst representing senior executives, and New York Cares, a service organization that coordinates volunteers who work with children, the homeless and the elderly.





Marty Lafferty, Chief Executive Officer, Distributed Computing Industry Association (DCIA): Marty is an accomplished new media industry leader with a track record of successful multi-business collaboration and excellence in pioneering the distribution of content via new technologies . During his career, he has served in senior positions for some of the world's most innovative entertainment and technology companies. Marty joined DCIA from Lafferty Media Partners LLC (LMP), where he served as Managing Partner. Prior to LMP, he was CEO of Zoom Culture, which he transformed from a year-old dotcom into a thriving digital television and new media firm in 24 months, working with partners including NBC and PAX TV. He also led Zoom's software development team and partnered with Apple engineers to serve as the first Beta client for Scale 8's advanced global storage network and edge content distribution system. Previously, Marty served as CMO for StreamSearch.com, where he oversaw the conversion of its streaming video search engine from a technological to an entertainment market focus, working with and for major studios such as Paramount and Artisan. While there, he also led the creation of the interactive multimedia site for Sundance Film Festival. Before StreamSearch, during his tenure as Microsoft TV VP of Corporate & Service Marketing, he supported the strategic refocus of Microsoft's WebTV acquisition from a purely B2C niche subscription offering to a B2B application suite for multichannel service distributors and their set-top suppliers, in addition to introductory plans for the Xbox game console. As President of FutureVision, Marty supervised the redesign and rollout of the industry's first true switched-digital-network service offering and the company's acquisition by Verizon. Before FutureVision, as VP of TV Answer, he led the development of numerous technically diverse simulcast interactive applications using IVDS over-the-air transmission spectrum, and secured affiliations with PBS and commercial broadcast station groups, culminating in a strategic alliance with CapCities/ ABC. Marty was also CEO of NBC's Olympics joint venture, where he led multiple vendors to develop alternative security solutions for a satellite-delivered mini-subscription PPV service, as well as oversaw cable and broadcast affiliate marketing. Prior to that, as GE Americom VP of Cable Services, he contributed to GE Astro's new fleet development and deployment, generating $445 million in sales to television programmers in 18 months. Finally, as VP of TDBS, Marty led Turner Broadcasting's internal and GI engineering teams to develop and deploy the industry's first signal-scrambling security technology for basic programming services. He has received recognition from, and held leadership positions in, numerous industry organizations throughout his career. Most recently, he was awarded the Council for Entrepreneurial Development Award as a top-fifty new company. Marty served as Membership Chairman of the Interactive Services Association, and as Chairman of the International Digital Satellite Television Symposium. He also co-founded the Satellite Broadcasting Communications Association and served as its first Vice Chairman. Marty holds a Master's degree from Yale University and Bachelors with honors from Williams College. He has received the NCTA's President's Award and a CTAM TAMI Award for industry service.

Tony Naughton, CEO, GridNetwoks: Since 1991, Tony Naughtin has focused on advancing innovative network technology companies, and in the process has built productive relationships with premier customers, alliance partners, venture capital firms, and investment banks. In 1996 Mr. Naughtin co-founded Internap Network Services Corporation (NASDAQ: INAP) where he served as President and CEO until August of 2001, took the company to a $110 million run rate, and completed two successful public stock offerings. Mr. Naughtin has served as a director on the boards of a variety of public and private companies including: Internap (Atlanta); Counterpane Internet Security, Inc. (Mt. View) - now a subsidiary of BT; GraniteEdge Networks, Inc. (Bellevue); GoAhead Software (Bellevue); Fine.com (Seattle); and most recently GridNetworks. In addition, he is a founding director of the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Washington School of Business, and was involved with the Washington Software Alliance (WSA) as both a Director and Vice-Chairman from 2000-2007. Mr. Naughtin started his career in the early 1980s with Cablevision Systems Corporation. He holds a B.A. in Communications from the University of Iowa and is a graduate of the Creighton University School of Law.
