Track III: Television without Boundaries: Cable, Telco, Satellite, Broadband & Mobile Define the Future of Entertainment and Communications The television experience has now officially graduated from its status as entertainment king of the living room, to the central component of the entire electronic consumer experience. Television 2.0 has now arrived and it includes cable with all of its integrated services of PVR, DRV, VOD, Broadband, Wireless, VoIP and Mobile as a communications as well as scalable video provider of clips and updates to movies and full programming. The competition for the future of Television 2.0 has just begun. There will be no immediate winner, and there will probably never be a winner take all. With 250 million consumers in this country to service and a global market to reach out to, the media, entertainment and technology companies are not competing in a zero sum marketing arena. In this session, we will address these issues and more. Ryan OHara is President of TV Guide Network, an entertainment network with original and acquired TV programming distributed in more than 84 million homes with 2006 revenues of $129 million. OHara is charged with managing TV Guide Networks strategy and growth and overseeing all aspects of the business, including programming, marketing, publicity, advertising sales, operations, business affairs and finance. OHara is also President of TV Guide Broadband, an advertising supported video programming service which is currently marketed and distributed on You Tube, Veoh, Comcast The Fan, AOL Video and Yahoo. Previously, OHara served as President of TVG, Gemstar-TV Guides horseracing television network and web business. During his tenure, he was responsible for the overall business operations and the P & L. During that time, revenues grew from $39 million to $52 million and distribution grew 26%. He also managed TVGs rights activities with track and on-line partners and coordinated with the companys affiliate sales group to secure long-term carriage deals. OHara has also served as Senior Vice President of Business Development and Strategic Planning for Gemstar-TV Guide. In that role, he was responsible for corporate strategy and deal making across numerous media segments including publishing, cable and satellite, and consumer electronics. Prior to joining Gemstar-TV Guide, OHara was Director of Interactive TV Strategy for BSkyB, based in London. While at the Sky UK satellite platform, he focused on creating interactive content that differentiated the platform from cable and Internet competitors. Before BSkyB, he worked for Fox Cable Networks and Fox/Liberty Networks. As Director of Business Development, he helped launch the Regional Sports Report on 17 Fox Sports Nets. He also worked on rights acquisitions with NASCAR, ACC Basketball, Major League Baseball and regional sports buys that aired on FSN, FX, Speedvision and Fox Sports. Prior to joining News Corp/Fox, OHara worked as an entertainment management consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers and in brand management at Nestle USA. Mr. OHara serves on the Board of Directors of the Hollywood & Radio Television Society and is a member of the Paley Center of Media. He is also on the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Young Presidents Organization. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Stanford University and a Masters of Business Administration from the Harvard Business School.
Amy Friedlander-Hoffman currently runs Priority Digital Media, a strategic consulting practice focused on content and distribution strategy across TV, broadband and mobile. PDM works with programmers, technology companies and distributors to help them achieve their specific goals in digital media. Most recently, Amy was the Senior Vice President, Programming for AT&T Operations. As AT&T entered the video market to compete with cable and satellite, Amy oversaw the interactive programming and convergence for Project Lightspeed, the initiative to expand the fiber-optics network deeper into neighborhoods to deliver AT&T U-verse TV, AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet, U-verse Enabled and voice over IP services. Amy was ultimately responsible for AT&Ts broadband programming, which included overseeing all online content negotiation and licensing, and execution of AT&T's broadband and three screen content plans for AT&Ts online services. Such services included Blue Room, Homezone, Broadband TV, U-verse OnTheGo and others. Preceding AT&T, Ms. Friedlander-Hoffman headed a consulting practice, Xanthum Partners, which helped clients from around the globe with content strategy, development and deployment. Ms. Friedlander-Hoffman was previously General Counsel and SVP of Business Development for Intertainer, the first VOD service delivered over both broadband and cable and helped the company raise over $100 Million from companies such as Microsoft, Comcast, Intel, Qwest, Sony, NBC and Thomson Consumer Electronics. She was responsible for negotiating content agreements with the major studios and programmers, distribution agreements with cable companies and telcos, and general technology ventures. In the Business Development role, Ms. Friedlander-Hoffman was responsible for international development and led her team to implement Intertainers strategy related to content distribution and software services. Prior to her tenure with Intertainer, Ms. Friedlander-Hoffman practiced corporate law at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in Los Angeles. Ms. Friedlander-Hoffman holds a JD from the University of Chicago and a BA with honors from the University of Michigan.
Kristin Rolla, Director of Business and Content, AOL Television and Moviefone.com, AOL: Kristin brings more than 15 years of Internet industry experience to her role as Director of Business and Content for AOLs biggest entertainment destinations; AOL Television and Moviefone.com. In this position, Ms. Rollas responsibilities include growing audience, engagement, and revenue for the sites through business development, product and content development, strategic partnerships, sales, and marketing. Prior to assuming her current role at AOL, Ms. Rolla spent seven years developing the companys entertainment business, including starting the Partner Relations group, tasked with developing relationships with and acquiring content with film studios and television networks. She also developed Unscripted, AOLs exclusive video interview series. Before joining AOL, Ms. Rolla held executive marketing positions at MXG Media. She also spent ten years in the music industry as label manager at companies including Mojo Records. Kristin Rolla holds a bachelor of arts in history with a business emphasis from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and a master of business administration from the UCLA Anderson School of Management.
Michael Gordon, Chief Strategy Officer and Co-Founder, Limelight Networks: Mikes charter is to ensure that Limelight Networks supports the emerging digital media strategies and business models of today's media companies. Prior to Limelight Networks, Mike co-founded Axient Communications, which built a nationwide next-generation Internet network; cofounded Cyclone Commerce, an enterprise software company that provides cross-enterprise collaboration solutions; and co-founded Gateway Data Sciences Corporation, a software and services company. Mike has also held marketing and management positions at IBM and National City Bank.
Mark Taylor, Senior Vice President, Strategy & Business Development, Content Markets, Level 3 Communications: Mr. Taylor is Senior Vice President of Emerging Opportunities for Level 3s Content Markets Group. Over the past five years, he has held a variety of positions within the company, most recently as head of Strategy and Mergers & Acquisitions in Europe and previously, as head of the IP & Data Services Strategic Business Unit in Europe. Prior to joining Level 3, Mr. Taylor spent two years as a Business Leader for Concert, a joint venture between AT&T and British Telecommunictions (BT), where he managed global customer contract origination and execution. He also worked with BT Syncordia Solutions, the Information & Communications Technology unit of BT. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Telecommunications Engineering from Plymouth University and a post graduate Diploma in Management Studies from Kingston Business School.
Mitch Oscar, EVP Televisual Applications, MPG: Mitchell Oscar currently holds the position of Executive Vice President, Televisual Applications, a newly created position at MPG, a division of Havas global marketing services company, focusing on the development and deployment of new video applications as they traverse digital television, broadband and wireless platforms. His mission is to explore the potential value of interactive video media applications and technologies for the development (ideas and implications) and execution of advertising models for MPG clients. Prior to joining MPG, Mitch was EVP, Carat Digital, and held the position of SVP/Director of Media Futures at Universal McCann. His book, Trials & Defibrillations: Interactive Television in the U.S., provides a comprehensive analysis of the learnings gleaned through his in-market advertiser-supported trials, consulting, educational gatherings and industry interactions. Since 1991, Mitch has been president of HocusFocus, a media and marketing consultancy whose primary focus is interactive television and television distribution technologies. Shahid is currently a Senior Partner at IBB Consulting Group, LLC, a premier boutique consulting firm serving leading broadband-related product and service providers in Cable, Mobile, Media and Technology industries. At IBB, Shahid advises top management at leading clients such as Sony Entertainment, Showtime, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision and Comcast on Digital Strategy, New Product/Service Development/Launch, Merger Integration, Business Development and Operational Optimization. Some of Shahids recent engagements include the transformation of Advertising operations for a leading Cable MSO, development of Digital Strategy for a major Hollywood studio, merger integration of on-line businesses for a leading sports TV network, integration of two leading kids TV networks, as well as launches of a mobile-based movie TV network, a multi-platform TV network, an HD TV network, and a broadband entertainment portal. Prior to joining IBB, Shahid was a Managing Director at BearingPoint (formerly KPMG Consulting), responsible for leading BearingPoints Entertainment and Information Services industry practice, serving clients such as Warner Music Group, Major League Baseball, Reuters, Moodys and Rodale. Prior to that, he was a Client Services Partner at IBM Global Services in Communication Industry. Shahid holds an MBA in Marketing and Finance from NYUs Stern School of Business, and is a Fellow at U. Penns Wharton School of Business. He has published numerous white-papers, is a frequent speaker at leading industry conferences, and is often quoted in leading publications such as the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Red Herring, the New York Times, etc.
