And while there were always the naysayer, predicting such gems such as the end of Hollywood with the invention of TV or that cable would doom the TV industry, the entertainment industry has more durable than they could have ever suspected. In fact, with the coming of new technologies, the entertainment and media industries has emerged as a global powerhouse. And the more things change, the more they stay the same. Entertainment and media are being challenged once again - Hollywood 2.0 is now upon us with an entirely new set of technologies with new rules of engagement. In this session, we are delighted to welcome a group of frontline players in the Hollywood 2.0 transformation. Mara Sternthal, Senior Vice President, Business Development, Ascent Media Group: Mara Sternthal is the Senior Vice President of Business Development at Ascent Media Group, overseeing the launch of the newly announced Global Media Exchange (GMX) and spearheading efforts to bring buyers and sellers of premium content onto the platform. GMX will be the first online marketplace to provide content owners and rights holders with a platform to sell and distribute film, television, short films and other video content to web publishers, cable, satellite and IPTV channels, television networks and stations around the world. Ascent Media Group, formerly known as Liberty Livewire, is the worlds largest provider of integrated global services for the creation, management and distribution of media content. The company services major film studios, independent producers, broadcast networks, channels, advertising agencies and other content producers and aggregators from more than 70 facilities worldwide. Prior to joining Ascent, Mara consulted entertainment and new media clients, specializing in developing and implementing content acquisition and programming strategies, sourcing new revenue opportunities, negotiating partnerships and alliances. Her clients included media and technology companies such as Microsoft, VCs and institutional investors. Prior to becoming a consultant, Mara served as Senior Vice President of Business Affairs and Development at Paramount, overseeing the full spectrum of transactions for the Home Video Group and the development of new media business worldwide. Mara led her team in structuring and closing Paramounts first content deals with online video platforms, e.g., Amazon, Apple and CinemaNow. She was also a Paramount board representative for Movielink, the first studio-owned movie download service on the Internet. Before Paramount, Mara was Vice President, Business Development and Pay TV at Warner Bros., where she initiated and managed relationships with international media companies, in addition to being a Warner representative on the board of HBOs Latin American satellite TV platform, HBO Ole. Mara also served as Vice President, Corporate Development of Sony Pictures Entertainment, where she was responsible for evaluating and recommending investments and acquisitions to senior management. Prior to joining Sony, Mara negotiated content and equity agreements for HBO, leading her team in securing Disney as a key content partner for HBO Asia. Mara launched her entertainment career with ABC, where she was responsible for the international distribution of ABC-owned programming (including the Academy Awards and Major League Baseball) to Latin America, Asia, Middle East and Africa. She began her career as a banker on Wall Street with Irving Trust. In addition, she has been an advisor to Internews and Irex, both non-profit organizations dedicated to the development of free and independent media worldwide. Mara is a member of the Los Angeles Committee of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Dick Glover, President and CEO, Or Die Networks and Funny or Die: Dick Glover is President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Or Die Networks, which includes FunnyorDie.com, ShredorDie.com, EatDrinkorDie.com, PwnorDie.com and KungFuTodd.com. FunnyorDie.com, launched in April of 2007, is one of the most visited comedy sites on the web according to publicly available data at www.quantcast.com. For comedic celebrities, FunnyorDie.com has quickly become the "place to be seen" on the Web, and for users, FunnyorDie.com is simply the best place to go online to easily find 20 minutes or more of laughter every day. Or Die Networks is a rapidly growing group of celebrity-anchored video websites each targeting specific areas of interest. Each site in the network operates as its own venture, but leverages centralized infrastructure, resources, and technology to ensure world-class features, performance, and ad sales. Currently, Or Die Networks includes FunnyorDie.com, ShredorDie.com, EatDrinkorDie.com and PwnorDie.com. Prior to Funny or Die, Glover was Vice President of Broadcasting and New Media for the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) and for NASCAR Digital Entertainment. At NASCAR, Glover ran the Los Angeles office overseeing all television, new media businesses, entertainment programming and promotion on behalf of the sport. A 20-year veteran of broadcasting and media, Glover was previously an Executive at the Walt Disney Company in various Senior Management roles in their ABC and Internet Groups. Glover also spent seven years with ESPN, most recently as Executive Vice President, Programming where he was responsible for all aspects of ESPN, Inc.s domestic programming efforts, which included ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNEWS, ESPN Classic and ESPN.com. He was the executive in charge of the planning, development and launch of ESPN.com in 1994 and was instrumental in the sites impressive growth to its current position as an industry leader.
Lisa Farris, GM for Filmaka, a global creative community and entertainment marketplace. Farris began her work in interactive media; leveraging technology to transform the way consumers, entertainment and brands engage, since 1998. With over 17 years experience in branding, consumer direct marketing and interactive media, she was most recently Chief Marketing Officer for Move, Inc. Before joining Move, Lisa founded Wondernation, Inc. a childrens Edutainment company which continues to license programs throughout the U.S. Prior to her edutainment start-up, Ms. Farris joined Universal Music Group in 1997 and held various positions, ranging from VP Strategic Marketing for MCA Records to SVP Market Development for Universal Music Groups eLabs. While she led market development for UMGs eLabs, she was instrumental in leading the vision for UMGs first e-commerce and interactive media team, which was dedicated to exploring, developing, and evolving innovative global business, new technology strategies, new revenue opportunities and business models. Lisa was charged with expanding consumer exposure and enjoyment to the worlds largest artist roster and music entertainment network across emerging technology platforms. Her responsibilities spanned across all digital platforms overseeing strategic partnerships, the introduction of new physical formats such as DVD-Audio, and the adoption of several groundbreaking wireless and iTV multi-access platform application initiatives. Farris developed a first-of-its-kind slate of premium music programming exclusively for broadband consumers, for which she has two patents. Lisa also built the first WOM and online grass roots marketing teams at UMG in 1998. As Vice President, Strategic Marketing for MCA Records (also a Universal Co.), she oversaw and led the labels advertising, corporate partnerships, research, and consumer-direct marketing efforts. She shepherded the development and implementation of MCA Records website and artist internet strategy. During her tenure Farris was responsible for launching several artist brands via internet, alternative markets and executing media campaigns for artists including Aqua, Blink 182, Live, New Radicals, Sublime, Semisonic, Mary J. Blige, as well as top selling career albums for B.B. King (Deuces Wild), Lyle Lovett, George Martin, and catalog artists such as Jimi Hendrix & Jimmy Buffet. Ms. Farris sat on the Board of Directors for Get Music was an active member of the RIAA. Before joining MCA Records, she was Vice President of Marketing and Operations for Music Marketing Network, an independent market research, consumer-direct marketing and strategic alliance firm serving the music and entertainment industry. Ms. Farris oversaw the Nashville and Los Angeles markets. Previously, she was Senior Director of Marketing for the New York office of Music Sales Corporation; a preeminent London- based full service music publishing organization. Lisa began her career in radio advertising in New York.
Jim Moloshok, Executive Chairman, The GoFish Network: Jim Moloshok is the Executive Chairman of GoFish, the worlds leading youth and family ad network with 71 million unique worldwide and #3 in its youth and family category right behind Disney and Viacom. Throughout his career Moloshok has managed the intersection of technology and entertainment for some of the world's biggest media companies including Yahoo!, Warner Bros. and HBO and was named by TV Week as one of the 'Top Ten Internet Executives You Can't Afford To Ignore.' As President of Digital Initiatives for Home Box Office, Moloshok was responsible for exploring new opportunities for the company, focusing on innovative content and fast-changing technology. Before joining HBO, Moloshok was senior vice president, Entertainment and Content Relationships at Yahoo! building partnerships with movie studios, TV networks and producers. While at Yahoo!, the areas under his supervision included Kids, Movies, TV, Games, Sports, Health and News. Prior to joining Yahoo! Moloshok was president of Warner Bros. Online and president and CEO of Entertaindom.com, an original entertainment destination for Time Warner. Under Moloshok's leadership, Warner Bros. was named by Variety as the 'Most Aggressive of All Studios on the Web,' and in its debut month, the independent Entertaindom eclipsed other more established entertainment sites. Warner Bros. Online was the first studio site to accept advertising and evolve into an online business with its own sales and marketing team separate from any other sales efforts of the company. Prior to running Warner Bros. Online, Moloshok was senior vice president of Marketing at Warner Bros. and previously held the same position at Lorimar Telepictures, a television distribution company, which merged with Lorimar in 1986 where he was also responsible for marketing to consumers, broadcasters and advertisers. Jim, who lives in the Los Angeles area, was a child spokesperson for UNICEF, and was a responsible party in the discovery of 'weather legend' Al Roker, having hired Al for his first job in television.
Jeffrey Calman, Vice President Studio Relations and New media, Blockbuster Inc.: Jeffrey Calman is Vice President Studio Relations and New Media for Blockbuster where he leads efforts to acquire digital content in support of the Companys strategy become a multi-channel provider of media entertainment. Calman, an industry veteran with extensive background in all aspects of content licensing and acquisition, digital content distribution, and digital rights management, joined the company in May of 2008. Before joining Blockbuster, Calman headed up his own digital programming and distribution consulting firm, working with a variety of clients, including Genius Products, Inc., The Weinstein Company and ViewNow. Prior to his consulting work, Calman spent more than 20 years at Warner Bros., where his most recent position was executive vice president, video on demand (VOD) and electronic sell-through (EST) in Warners home video division. In that position he oversaw the domestic sales, marketing and finance staffs responsible for the creation, structuring and implementation of Warner Home Videos VOD, digital VOD and EST activities, as well as managing the studios digital rights management, anti-piracy and technology policies. During his tenure with Warners, Calman also served in a variety of other management positions including senior vice president for domestic cable distribution, New York, where he negotiated distribution deals with pay-TV and cable networks, as well as managed business affairs and content acquisition. He has also been involved with the development of a performing arts television network and, earlier in his career, represented numerous European and Japanese media companies in their U.S. licensing, acquisition and marketing efforts. Calman earned his undergraduate degree from Columbia University, a masters degree from New York University and an M.B.A. from The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He resides in Los Angeles.
Brent Weinstein, CEO, 60Frames Entertainment: Brent Weinstein is CEO and one of the key architects of 60Frames Entertainment, the innovative, Beverly Hills-based financing, ad sales and syndication company for professional artists to create and monetize original online content. Prior to 60Frames, Weinstein was head of Digital Media at leading Hollywood talent and literary agency UTA, where he helped form the department in 2004 to oversee the agencys digital practice areas, including broadband, video games and mobile entertainment. Weinstein led the dept.s team of dedicated digital media agents to identify and evaluate opportunities for UTA clients: actors, writers, directors, producers, and recording artists, in addition to many business-to-business and consumer-oriented technology and corporate clients. Weinstein, with UTA co-founder and partner Jeremy Zimmer, also formed UTAOnline (www.utaonline.net), a dedicated broadband division that finds and represents the next generation of web-based content artists. Launched in October 2006, UTAOnline is the first of its kind among major talent agencies. During his tenure at UTA, Weinstein made digital media deals for many of the best known artists in entertainment, including Johnny Depp, Jack Black, Jim Carrey, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, as well as top digital media artists such as Big Fantastic (Prom Queen), AskANinja (askaninja.com), and others. Prior to joining UTA in 2001, Weinstein practiced corporate and business litigation in Los Angeles and Irvine, California. He is a graduate of the University of Southern California, where he earned a Bachelors degree in Business Administration, and the University of San Diego School of Law. He is married and lives in Los Angeles.
Greg Goodfried is the Co-Founder, President and COO of the social entertainment company, EQAL, and is the Co-Creator and Executive Producer of the online video series lonelygirl15 and KateModern. While practicing law as a first-year associate, Goodfried, along with Miles Beckett and Mesh Flinders, created lonelygirl15 in the summer of 2006. Goodfried and Beckett followed this success by launching KateModern in the summer of 2007 and forming EQAL to develop and create new interactive shows. lonelygirl15 and KateModern became pop culture phenomenons, and are the most popular online interactive shows, collectively receiving over 150 million views to date. Trained as an entertainment attorney, Goodfried has a background in new media and copyright law. He holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley where he was a member of the Men's Varsity Golf Team. He received a J.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles and went on to practice law at Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp, LLP. Greg is married to Amanda Goodfried, Series Producer on lonelygirl15 and Head of Production for EQALs Los Angeles office. As an expert on the convergence of entertainment and technology and online video, Goodfried has been a speaker on panels throughout Europe and across the US and Canada and was a co-host with Miles Beckett of Mixed Media, a live streaming web show on NowLive (nowlive.com).
