The New Hollywood Equation – Content Owners, New Platforms, Agents & Commerce
As the entertainment industry enters its next, albeit yet to be determined, phase of production and distribution – where digital technologies take a stronger and more significant role – the basic relationship among power players is likely to take new and unique forms. For the sake of discussion, we might call this the New Hollywood Equation, where content owners, talent, talent agents and the new distribution channels all stake out new territory and attempt to find new formula for dealing with the next generation of Hollywood. In this session, we bring together some of the best informed creative executives in the field.

Virginia M. Turezyn, Managing Director, Technology Group: Virginia M. Turezyn joined American Capital’s Palo Alto office in April 2006 as Managing Director and Co-Head of the Technology Group. Virginia brings over 24 years of experience in technology investing in areas that include software and services, consumer Internet, and digital media. Prior to American Capital, Virginia was a Managing Director at Constellation Ventures in NY. Prior roles include: Co-Founder and Managing Director of Infinity Capital, LLC and its predecessor company Information Technology Ventures. Earlier, Virginia was a Vice President in the Venture Capital Group at Morgan Stanley & Co., where she established a west coast presence and venture capital practice. She started her career at Ernst & Young in general audit. Ms. Turezyn is actively involved with American Capital’s technology group investments in CreditCards.com, HomeAway, People Media and Moxy Media. She is a graduate of Queens College and is a CPA emeritus.

P. Clark Hallren, Managing Director,J.P. Morgan Securities Inc.: Mr. Hallren is a Managing Director in the Entertainment Industries Group of JPMorgan Securities Inc.: Mr. Hallren has been with JPMorgan’s Entertainment Industries Group since November 1986. During his tenure, he has worked with various groups at JPMorgan to provide a variety of financial services to corporate entertainment clients, including Loan Syndications, Public and Private High Yield Debt, Private Equity Placement, Public Equity, Direct Equity Investment, Asset Backed Securitization, Acquisition Financing, Derivatives, Foreign Exchange and other risk hedging products. Mr. Hallren holds degrees in Finance, Accounting and Economics from Oklahoma State University. He also holds Series 7, 63 and 24 NASD licenses.








Alix Cottrell serves as General Manager of Comcast Interactive Media’s Web site Fancast.com. Fancast is the first online destination that enables users to watch, manage and find entertainment content wherever it is available – on Fancast, on television, online, on DVD or in theaters. As GM, Ms. Cottrell oversees and provides direction to product management, engineering, marketing, sales and the editorial staff ensuring that budgets and metrics are achieved. Prior to joining Comcast, Ms. Cottrell served as Director of Creative Development for America Online, Inc., where she provided strategic management for key initiatives of AOL Entertainment (a division of AOL) with responsibility for online editorial, including music, celebrity, television and movies. Ms. Cottrell is a graduate of The American University (Washington, DC), where she received a B.A. in International Relations and History.






Steve Stanford, Partner and President, Content and Entertainment, Agency 3.0: Steve Stanford is widely recognized as a digital media pioneer, having been at the forefront of the digital content space since its inception. As President of Content and Entertainment, Stanford is responsible for creating and connecting content with brands and new distribution platforms. Stanford is a serial entrepreneur in the fields of digital media, telecommunications, and entertainment. Stanford was the co-founder and COO of Amp’d Mobile, and VP of marketing at Boost Mobile. Prior to joining Boost he was responsible for wireless strategy at Best Buy. Stanford’s extensive entertainment and digital media background includes creating ICM’s Digital Media Group, and co-founding partner and CEO of Icebox, the first site to create original programming for the web using a-list Hollywood talent, and to migrate a show from the web to traditional media. Most recently, Stanford served as General Manager of the AOL/HBO broadband comedy joint venture This Just In. Stanford was named one of the top 100 Internet entrepreneurs by Time Magazine, and one of the Digital Dozen by Time Digital. He was also listed as one of “10 to Watch” by Red Herring Magazine and as one of the “35 Top Executives under 35” by the Hollywood Reporter.

Mark J. Kapczynski, Chief Operating Officer, Kontrol Media: Mark Kapczynski has a successful track record as a serial entrepreneur, chief executive and media industry expert. His current venture, Kontrol Media Corp., is an idea incubator for startups and senior professionals in the media and technology markets including Web 2.0, mobile, and television. Prior to that, he was founder and CEO of MESoft, a media and entertainment software company, for which Kapczynski raised two rounds of seed and venture capital funding exceeding $8MM. Under his leadership, the company also grew its distribution to a global level and partnered with leading IT companies, such as IBM, Sun and AMD, and media companies that include Avid, Ascent Media and Sony. Additionally, he received a patent for a digital media workflow process. From 1995 to 2002, Kapczynski worked at Microsoft Corporation as their Director of Worldwide Media & Entertainment Solutions Group. During that time, he worked with numerous digital media and internet start-ups such as Homestore (now Move.com), Movielink, and MeTV. Mark Kapczynski got his first taste at being an entrepreneur in 1993 when he founded Digital Genesis-a pioneer in the internet/e-commerce space-which was sold to publicly-traded Netgateway, Inc. (NGWY, now IIG) three years later. Mr. Kapczynski graduated from UCLA film school and continues to be active in multiple industry associations that span media, mobile telecom, technology, and Internet Web 2.0. In his free time, Mr. Kapczynski enjoys car racing and playing the drums.
