Online video is not a minor phenomena of the “new media” space, but rather, short form online video is impacting no only our entertainment sensibilities, is actually impacting the national conversation – the culture as a whole on an every day basis. What the future holds in store for the short form online video is anyone’s guess – but it will surely not disappear anytime soon. In fact, it will likely grow in terms of product and viewership. With that in mind, executives in the industry must evaluate and understand the online video form as a business, as a product to invest in and nurture. Therefore we are delighted to bring together a group of the industry’s experts, who represents all sides of the industry food-chain, production, distribution, advertising and finance. Miles Beckett is the Co-Founder and CEO of the social entertainment company, EQAL, and is the Co-Creator and Executive Producer of the online video series’ lonelygirl15 and KateModern. After graduating from medical school and practicing to become a plastic surgeon, Beckett came up with the idea of posting a serialized drama on the internet and along with Mesh Flinders and Greg Goodfried, created lonelygirl15 in the summer of 2006. Beckett and Goodfried followed this success by launching KateModern in the summer of 2007 and forming EQAL to develop and create new interactive shows. lonelygirl15 and KateModern became pop culture phenomenons, and are the most popular online interactive shows, collectively receiving over 150 million views to date. Beckett holds a B.S. in Neuroscience from the University of California at Berkeley and an M.D. from the University of California at San Diego. He completed an internship year in the Integrated Plastic Surgery residency program at Loma Linda University Medical Center and one year of tissue engineering research at the National Institutes of Health as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Scholar. He was the founder and Editor-In-Chief of “The Pulse,” a UCSD Medical School newsletter and “The Inhuman Condition,” a UCSD Medical School underground comedy newsletter as well as the Design Editor and staff writer for “The Heuristic Squelch,” the UC Berkeley humor magazine. Prior to forming EQAL, Beckett was the Founder and CEO of SHOUTBOY (shoutboy.com), a comedy video podcast website and the Writer/Director of the political spoof, “West Wingers.” As an expert on the convergence of entertainment and technology and online video, Beckett has been a speaker on panels throughout Europe, Australia and across the US and Canada and was a co-host with Greg Goodfried of Mixed Media, a live streaming web show on NowLive (nowlive.com).

Craig Shapiro, President of New Media at GOOD: As President of New Media at GOOD, Craig Shapiro is responsible for the company’s digital strategy, business development, distribution and technology activities. Prior to good, Craig led content strategy and acquisition efforts at the mobile virtual network operator Helio, where he developed strategic partnerships and negotiated licensing arrangements with leading brands and entertainment properties such as ESPN, FOX, Google, Wikipedia and YouTube. Craig also sat on the board of directors of the mobile marketing association. Before Helio, Craig was Vice President of Proteus Inc., a leading web and mobile technology developer. At Proteus, he was responsible for all new business development and revenue growth for the company which facilitated the successful sale of the company to Telitas group in 2004. Craig received his B.A. From Washington University in St. Louis in political science and is originally from Washington, DC.


Marti Nyman is Vice President, Strategic Development at Swarmcast Inc.. In this capacity he is responsible for developing the company's overall strategic vision and plan, as well as forging a network of strategic partnerships that are critical to the growth of the company. Prior to this, Mr. Nyman held a broad array of leadership roles at GE, Ericsson, Best Buy and ADC Telecommunications in a variety of functional responsibilities that include Business Development, Mergers & Acquisitions, Corporate Venture Capital, Strategic Alliances, Sales and Marketing, Manufacturing and International Operations. He is a Mechanical Engineering graduate (with honors) from the University of New Hampshire, with a minor in Materials Science.










Chris Petrovic, VP New Media, Playboy: Mr. Petrovic is a new media veteran, having started his career in the Internet marketplace in the late 90’s. He has held executive management positions in a variety of corporate settings, from start-ups to publicly traded companies to venture capital firms. Petrovic currently serves as Vice President of Business Development, Digital Media for Playboy Entertainment Group. In this role, he is responsible for business development initiatives all divisions of the Entertainment Group including Playboy Mobile, Playboy Online and Playboy TV. Before joining Playboy, Mr. Petrovic served as Vice President of Business Development for AG Interactive, the new media division of American Greetings. Petrovic oversaw all business development efforts across all three of the division’s business units – mobile (both domestic and international), Internet and instant messenger. Petrovic joined AG Interactive from theglobe.com, where he served as Vice President of Strategy and Business Development and was responsible for developing and growing the company’s consumer VoIP offering (Voiceglo) as well as its print media business (Computer Games Magazine). Petrovic is a graduate of Columbia University in New York and holds a J.D. from Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles. He began his new media career as CEO of BannerGreetings.com, an Internet start-up, and from there went on to become COO and General Counsel of Buzztone, a leading viral marketing agency, before joining the venture capital firm Prime Ventures as their VP of Business and Legal Affairs, managing the business development and legal operations of its portfolio companies, including most notably drkoop.com. Petrovic is based in Playboy’s Los Angeles office.

Donick Cary, Executive Producer, “Lil’ Bush”, Founder, Sugarlab Digital Studios: Emmy-winning writer and producer Donick Cary got his start writing for “Late Night with David Letterman.” He continued working with the show through its move to CBS, serving as both head writer and the “guy in the bear suit.” After five years in late night, Cary moved to “The Simpsons,” where he served as a co-executive producer for four seasons. He later spent a season in the same capacity on “Just Shoot Me.” Cary has produced pilots for and developed with: Brillstein Grey, Sony Television, Happy Madison, ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, FX, HBO, the WB and Nickelodeon. Cary is currently executive producing his show “Lil’ Bush” for Comedy Central, the first mobi/series ever to move from cell phones to television. Cary grew up in Nantucket Island and attended Boston University.


Fred Goldring is a Partner in the Beverly Hills entertainment law firm of Goldring, Hertz & Lichtenstein, LLP. He is a member of the California and New York Bars and is a graduate of Duke University and the University of Miami School of Law. His firm’s clients include such superstars as Will Smith, Beyoncé, Gwen Stefani, The Black Eyed Peas, Herbie Hancock, Ne-Yo, and Britney Spears. Fred is also a co-founder of Membrain, LLC, an entertainment strategy consulting firm whose clients include Hasbro, McDonald’s Corp., Jib-Jab, Coty Cosmetics, and MagNet Solutions, as well as on-line media market research firm, Big Champagne, of which he is also a co-founder. Fred is the former Chairman of the Board of Directors of Rock The Vote, and he was Executive Producer of his client will.i.am’s “Yes We Can” music video, which received a 2008 Emmy Award for Best New Approaches in Daytime Entertainment. Fred is also Co-Executive Producer of the upcoming documentary film project The People Speak, based on Howard Zinn’s seminal work The People’s History of the United States.







Seth Shapiro is a two-time Emmy® Award winner, and a recognized leader in the profitable application of new technology to emerging business models. Shapiro has managed digital media initiatives for and with partners including Disney, DIRECTV, TiVo, HBO, STARZ, CBS, NBC, FOX, ESPN, the NFL, MLB, Microsoft, Wink, Cendant, Jones Intercable and ACTV. He is Principal of New Amsterdam Media LLC. SVP Strategy of the Opportunity Management Company and a partner at Media Valuation Partners. As a consultant, Shapiro has worked with media clients including Showtime, Time Warner Cable, Sun Microsystems, CompleteTV, DigisoftTV, Goldman Sachs, Endemol and SVT. Most recently, he is co-founder and CEO of ARC: The A&R Channel, a Comcast On Demand channel available in 15,000,000 US cable homes. As Head of Production at DIRECTV Advanced Services, Shapiro managed over 20 service launches across four platforms, led production on DIRECTV/TiVo, designed the groundbreaking NFL DVR Highlights On Demand Service and was a key contributor to the 2002 DIRECTV/TiVo Master Agreement. Shapiro is a member of OVP Venture Partners' Technology Advisory Group, the IP Media Conference/SATCON Advisory Board, the Television Academy's Blue Ribbon Emmy Committee and the Producer's Guild. He is a magna cum laude graduate of NYU and was Adelbert Alumni Scholar at Case Western Reserve and the Cleveland Institute of Music.
