There are web pages and web experiences for every human nuance and niche. Every family communicates through photo sharing and movie sharing websites. The blogging and social networking worlds have become the new "major media networks." Marc Ruxin, SVP, Director, Digital Strategy and Innovation, McCann WorldGroup: Marc leads McCann WorldGroups digital strategy practice across businesses and disciplines. In this capacity he runs the Emerging Media Trials program for Microsoft, leads the agency social media practice, and works with clients and new technology companies to create scalable digital marketing opportunities for media and creative constituencies to bring to market. Before joining McCann, Marc was the COO of The Mill Group, running the North American divisions of The Mill who is the leader in commercial visual effects, and Beam.tv the leading advertising digital asset management system. Prior to The Mill Marc was the EVP of Strategy at Gyro International, a global leader in technology advertising and marketing. Prior to that Ruxin was Vice President of Business Development at iVast the early leader in MPEG4 technology and VP of Business Development and Marketing at Eveo, Inc., one of the earliest user generated content portals. Before that Marc worked for WPP Group, where he was an MBA Marketing Fellow and ultimately lead West Coast new media strategy for the group. Before WPP, Marc started his career in A&R at EMI Records. Marc has a BA from Hamilton College and an MBA from Columbia Business School.
Justin Gunn, Vice President, Online Programming, Current TV: As one of the founding executives at Current, Justin Gunn played an integral part in the development of several of Currents most innovative initiatives. Gunn worked to build Currents pioneering Viewer-Created Content division (VC2), headed up programming for the co-branded Yahoo! Current Network and was a primary architect in the construction of Currents social news website, Current.com. Gunn got his start in the television industry at the age of 15 by creating a short documentary, which aired on one of the first UGC-based television programs, My World on Video. Since then, he has worked as an anchor, reporter and producer for various television and new media outlets including MTV, Channel One, CNET, Inside Edition, Extra! and FOX. With a natural ability for performing in front of an audience and a wealth of experience in the television and new media industries, Gunn has spoken at several high profile industry events including The Producers Guild of America: Local T.V. Meets Global New Media. Gunns passion for filmmaking still drives him to the field whenever possible and he continues to serve as executive producer of Current's award-winning annual coverage of the Burning Man Festival.
Chad Gutstein, Executive Vice President, Ovation TV: Chad E. Gutstein is Executive Vice President of Ovation TV. His primary responsibilities are arts industry relations, digital and on-demand media, international activities, business development, new ventures, partnerships, finance, administration and human resources. Chad is also a member of the Arcadia Investment Partners partnership and was instrumental in the acquisition and financing of Ovation TV. Mr. Gutstein is a unique example of a media and entertainment executive. His more than 12 years of experience interweaves both operational expertise with a core knowledge base in financial management and advisory roles. As a media executive, he has served in roles covering business strategy and development, distribution, programming, marketing, and finance activities. As a principal investor and investment banker, Chads experience extends to venture capital, latter-stage private equity, domestic and cross-border M&A and financial restructurings. In total he has completed transactions totaling nearly $8 billion. Prior to joining Ovation TV, Mr. Gutstein was President of Entertainment Media Advisors (EMA), a consultancy firm whose mission is to provide strategy, business development and capital advisory services to companies operating in the media and entertainment industries. Prior to founding EMA, he was Senior Vice President of BuyTV, a start-up home shopping TV network. In partnership with Buy.com, BuyTVs goal was to combine the convenience of distance shopping with the storytelling power of lifestyle television to build a powerful new sales channel for mass-market branded retailers. He developed the business plan, programming, distribution, and retailer strategy for the network. From 1999 until 2003, Mr. Gutstein was Principal at WaterView Advisors, a $250mm private equity fund that made investments in the media, entertainment and communications industries. He was instrumental in the development, funding and launch of The Tennis Channel, and served as Interim CFO for both The Tennis Channel and Creative Planet. Prior to WaterView, he was an Associate with Rothschild, Inc. and a Senior Financial Analyst with Alex. Brown & Sons. He began his career in the marketing and generic drug division of Forest Laboratories. Mr. Gutstein served as Co-Chairman of the Entertainment Industry Foundations Genesis Group and is on the development board of the Center for Innovative Education.
Neil Stevenson, New Media and Entertainment group, IDEO: Neil Stevenson is the leader of IDEOs Kid + Play domain, a group focused on children and play. During his IDEO career, Neil has designed videogames, dolls, toys, websites, experiences and spaces, and has built up a large body of knowledge and methodology pertaining to kids, teens, and play. Prior to IDEO, Neil worked in youth-focused media for 10 years, as editor of some of Europes leading magazines, including The Face, Mixmag, and Heat. This media experience has given him a deep understanding about sociocultural youth trends and the way brands intersect with popular culture. This knowledge is further informed by an academic background in psychology and social anthropology, with degrees in each from Oxford University.
Angelo Sotira is CEO and Co-Founder of deviantART.com which has become the home of over 8 Million artists exhibiting over 57 Million works of Art in all categories of creative expression. Sotira has been deeply involved in technology and community building from a very early age. From his roots in dial-up bulletin board systems (BBS's) and IRC (chat) networks Angelo entered into his first major business endeavor by creating Dimension Music (DMusic.com), an underground music and MP3 discussion community with over 150,000 unique daily users at its peak in 1998. dMusic was purchased by Hollywood power-broker Michael Ovitz through his Lynx Technology group which brought Angelo to Los Angeles immediately upon graduating from High School. deviantART is also a massive social network which ranks amongst the top 100 trafficked web properties in the world with a unique audience of over 20 million people. Originally born in Greece, Sotira currently resides in Los Angeles, California where he enjoys piloting RC Helicopters and playing basketball in his free time.
Gabriel M. Ramsey, Associate, Orrick: Gabriel M. Ramsey, an associate in the Silicon Valley office and a member of the Intellectual Property Group, focuses his practice on intellectual property litigation. He has experience in high technology and entertainment related matters involving copyright, trademark, trade secret and patent law. He also has experience in licensing matters and general commercial disputes. Mr. Ramsey has represented Lucasfilm, Ltd., Lucas Digital Ltd., LucasArts Entertainment Co., CNET Networks, Inc., Universal Studios, The Walt Disney Company, Fox Entertainment Group, Fox Broadcasting, eHarmony.com, VideoEgg.com, Affinity Circles, Inc., Gracenote, Inc., Digidesign, Mesa/Boogie, Ltd., Pioneer Corp. and Microsoft Corp.
