Michael Kernan, Chief Executive Officer, NuMedia Studios (former executive ICM) Based in the Los Angeles office of ICM, Michael leads and coordinates the company's digital and new media assets, including working with ICM's London and New York offices. With its recent acquisition of The Broder Webb Chervin Silbermann Agency, ICM is the premier agency for creators of television and new media programming. Michael joined ICM in 2000, and has packaged numerous new media projects. He has been a leader in Internet deal making, in addition to developing content for the new media platform. Michael is a strategic advisor for technology and new media company clients on growth and financing. Prior to ICM, Michael practiced entertainment law at Lavely & Singer and Behr Abramson & Kaller, and consulted on patents and patent related issues at Gauntlet and Associates. Michael completed his undergraduate studies at The University of Illinois, and attended The University of California, Hastings College of Law, where he served as the Executive Associate Editor of "The Hastings Entertainment Law Review."
Robert Hayes is the Senior Vice President, General Manager, Digital Media for Showtime Networks Inc. In this position, Hayes is responsible for the companys online, broadband, wireless and interactive television (ITV) initiatives including day-to-day leadership, business development, content and production. Showtime recently consolidated all of their digital media operations under Hayes, and in this role he has also inherited domestic electronic sell-through (EST, or selling content to such platforms as iTunes) as well as developing further revenue opportunities through digital platforms. Previously, Hayes served as Senior Vice President, New Media and Vice President of New Media for Showtime Networks Inc., positions he held since April 2001. Prior to that, he was Vice President of Business Development and was instrumental in the strategy and launch of Showtimes digital multiplexes including SHOWTIME NEXT, SHOWTIME WOMEN and SHOWTIME FAMILYZONE. Hayes also served as Vice President, International Business Development, charged with assessing opportunities for SHOWTIME and other SNI brands in the international marketplace including launching and overseeing Showtimes ventures in Spain and the Middle East. He joined the company as Director of International Business Development in 1995. Previously, Hayes worked at Home Box Office as Manager of Programming, based in Prague, Czech Republic, as well as Manager of International Business Development based in New York. Hayes has done post graduate studies at Columbia University in Emerging Technologies and has received his M.B.A. in International Business from American University in Washington, D.C. He works in the company's New York headquarters.
Lori H. Schwartz, Senior Vice President, Director of Emerging Media: As Senior Vice President and Director of the Interpublic Emerging Media Lab, a center for marketing innovation located in Los Angeles, Lori provides consultation and solution recommendations for the latest in broadband, wireless and emerging media for the Interpublic groups global client roster, as well as facilitating emerging media upfronts and exclusive partnerships for the company and its clients. She has worked with a number of clients including Microsoft, Avery Dennison, Intel, Nestle and Sony. Prior to serving as Director of the Lab, Lori served as an interactive/new media producer at McCann Worldgroup, providing interactive expertise for the agencys Los Angeles client base. She worked with clients to create original content solutions across multiple channels. Lori also facilitated partnerships with entertainment, sports and other content providers, and served as the agency representative on all issues pertaining to emerging media. An active participant in many industry organizations, Lori is a member of the Producers Guild of Americas New Media Council and has led a project for the American Film Institute's Digital Content Lab. She is also an executive committee member of the Interactive Peer Group for the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. She participates in a number of advanced advertising standardizations groups and is a highly regarded industry speaker. When she is not working with clients, Lori can be found on stage in Hollywood, occasionally performing with improvisational comedy theaters.
Dan Fawcett is President of Digital Media for Fox Entertainment Group (FEG). In this position, he is responsible for supporting FEGs vast cable, TV and film brands online and driving the growth and evolution of Foxs digital media strategy, including exploiting Fox content across all digital platforms, pursuing long-term tactical initiatives with major technology players and developing additional revenue streams for Fox product. Fawcett was appointed to his current position after serving three years as Executive Vice President of Programming and Business & Legal Affairs for DIRECTV. Before joining DIRECTV, he was Executive Vice President of Business & Legal Affairs for Fox Cable Networks (FCN) where he oversaw all legal and business affairs matters for FCNs portfolio of more than 20 managed domestic sports and entertainment cable networks, including Fox Sports Net and FX. As FCNs chief business lawyer, Fawcett was responsible for structuring, negotiating and drafting transactions for programming rights, development, acquisition and production; for channel and content distribution through cable, satellite and other media platforms; and for Foxs sale or purchase of, or investment in, networks and other sports-related assets. Fawcett joined Fox in Los Angeles in 1997 as Senior Vice President of Business & Legal Affairs for Fox Sports Net. Prior to that, he was Assistant General Manager and General Counsel of FSN Pittsburgh. Prior to that, Fawcett was a corporate and finance attorney at Reed Smith in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Fawcett received his BA from Tufts, his JD from the University of Pittsburgh, and his MBA from Carnegie Mellon University.
Joshua Freeman, Executive Vice President, Digital Media, Discovery: As executive vice president, digital media, Josh Freeman is responsible for the strategic growth of Discoverys world-class portfolio of brands across digital platforms globally. Charged with seeking out new technology and alliances, and developing new business models and markets, Freeman directs the companys effort to expand its footprint by heightening Discoverys presence in the ever-evolving digital media space. Prior to joining Discovery in September 2007, Freeman was most recently senior vice president, operations & planning, AOL Products. He led business operations for a division employing more than 1,500 people, oversaw distribution partnerships for free AOL products and managed all content partnerships for AOL Video, striking more than 25 deals with companies such as CBS, NBC Universal, Fox, Sony, Viacom and Warner Bros. Previously, he was vice president, strategy and business development for AOL Video, the companys broadband video distribution business, which he helped launch. In this capacity, Freeman negotiated partnerships with major media companies and third-party technology providers. Throughout his tenure at AOL, which began in 1999, Freeman held a number of key posts including Director/Executive Director for Business Affairs and Development, and Manager/Senior Manager, Corporate Development. Prior to joining AOL, Freeman worked at Bain & Co. in Boston as a consultant to media, banking, retail and technology clients. Early in his career, he served as a program officer with the National Democratic Institute in Washington and in Moscow. Freeman earned an MBA and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University, and a bachelors degree in Russian Studies from Amherst College. He is based at Discoverys global headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland.
James Segil, co-founder & President, EdgeCast Networks: James is a proven web entrepreneur, having led and sold two successful startups. Prior to co-founding EdgeCast, James was vice president of business development for Talisma Corporation, an enterprise software vendor focusing on CRM software. James joined Talisma as a result of the acquisition of his company, KnowledgeBase, where he was president & COO. At KnowledgeBase, he worked with co-founders Alex, Phil and Lior, and was involved in all aspects of the company and responsible for its growth and development. With more than six years of leadership experience in the technology sector, James has started and grown businesses, built out scalable product and technology solutions, and created and managed high performance management teams. Prior to KnowledgeBase, James successfully led Web-hosting company Virtualis Systems through start-up, growth, acquisition, and a merger/integration. He was then COO of the web hosting division of Allegiance Telecom (Nasdaq: ALGX), the communications concern that acquired Virtualis in Fall 2000. While at Allegiance, James managed the integration of Virtualis as well as other ISP acquisitions into one centralized hosting network eventually re-branded as Hosting.com. James has a deep consumer marketing background having spent his early career (seven years) in brand management at Mattel before being sent by Mattel to business school full time as their first ever sponsored MBA. Prior to leaving Mattel, James was brand manager for Hot Wheels and responsible for more than $150 million in sales. James received his MBA from Harvard Business School and received his operations, marketing, finance and leadership skills from his front line positions growing brands and businesses. James lives in Los Angeles.
Chris Monteleone is currently Vice President of Business Operations and Revenue for Madison Square Garden Interactive. In this role he is responsible for all business development, content distribution, ad sales operations for the digital group. The Madison Square Garden Interactive network consists of 15+ web properties, some of which include: NYRangers.com, NYKnicks.com, theGarden.com, Radiocity.com and MSG.com. Prior to MSG, Chris was the Director of Digital Development and Sales for Rainbow Media. In that capacity he executed various deals for such properties as AMC's Mad Men, IFC Entertainment, Women's Entertainment and VOOM HD networks. Throughout his career Chris has worked predominantly in the digital space at Cablevision Systems Corp, Game Show Network and Comcast Networks. Chris currently resides in Huntington, NY with his wife and daughter.
Mark J. Kapczynski, Chief Operating Officer, Kontrol Media: Mark Kapczynski has a successful track record as a serial entrepreneur, chief executive and media industry expert. His current venture, Kontrol Media Corp., is an idea incubator for startups and senior professionals in the media and technology markets including Web 2.0, mobile, and television. Prior to that, he was founder and CEO of MESoft, a media and entertainment software company, for which Kapczynski raised two rounds of seed and venture capital funding exceeding $8MM. Under his leadership, the company also grew its distribution to a global level and partnered with leading IT companies, such as IBM, Sun and AMD, and media companies that include Avid, Ascent Media and Sony. Additionally, he received a patent for a digital media workflow process. From 1995 to 2002, Kapczynski worked at Microsoft Corporation as their Director of Worldwide Media & Entertainment Solutions Group. During that time, he worked with numerous digital media and internet start-ups such as Homestore (now Move.com), Movielink, and MeTV. Mark Kapczynski got his first taste at being an entrepreneur in 1993 when he founded Digital Genesis-a pioneer in the internet/e-commerce space-which was sold to publicly-traded Netgateway, Inc. (NGWY, now IIG) three years later. Mr. Kapczynski graduated from UCLA film school and continues to be active in multiple industry associations that span media, mobile telecom, technology, and Internet Web 2.0. In his free time, Mr. Kapczynski enjoys car racing and playing the drums.
