The Emerging Laws of Wikis, Blogs and Social Networks and Its Impact on Technology, Media and Entertainment The Web 2.0 universe is opening an entirely new and untested world of rights, rights holders and technology innovation. The Web 2.0 content rights, legal and technology space is perhaps entering its intellectually scalable period of investigation, probing and growth. The legal, technology and content industries will all be facing new and untested challenges. The legal implications of content rights, intellectual property, the relationship between rights holder and the myriad levels of digital distribution channels and distribution formats inherent in the web 2.0, Wiki. blogging and social networking worlds are now just emerging. We are delighted to be at the start of this new conversation. Charlene Li, Vice President, Principal Analyst, Forrester Research: Charlene primarily contributes to Forrester's offerings for the Interactive Marketing professional. She is one of the driving forces behind Forrester's Social Computing and Web 2.0 research, and examines how companies can use technologies like blogs, social networking, RSS, tagging, and widgets for marketing purposes. During her eight years at Forrester, Charlene has also led the marketing and media research team, and ran the San Francisco office. In her research, Charlene covers such marketing-related topics as consumer portals, search, and media site design. She also leverages her background in newspaper publishing and looks at online local media and online classifieds. In the past, she has also written about online advertising, online gaming, and media content strategies. She also contributes to her Groundswell blog and plans to publish a book by the same name in spring 2008.
Brian Balfour, CEO, Viximo: Brian Balfour is a serial internet entrepreneur and active member of the Boston tech community.Brian is currently founder of his fourth startup, Viximo, a company focused on the emerging virtual goods industry.Viximo is funded by North Bridge Venture Partners and Sigma Partners.Brian was also a founding member of Betahouse, a co-working space for tech entrepreneurs located in Cambridge.Brian specializes in online communities and blogs at www.SocialDegree.com.
Neel Chatterjee, Partner, Orrick: Neel Chatterjee, a Litigation and Intellectual Property partner in the Silicon Valley office, concentrates his practice on complex litigation for technology companies. Mr. Chatterjee has recognized experience in patent litigation, Internet liability litigation, trade secrets litigation, and technology transactions litigation. He has significant experience litigating and trying extremely complex disputes where simplifying difficult technical concepts and effective case management are keys to success. He has particular experience with computer networking, data storage, Internet and computer software technologies. Recently in 2008, the Daily Journal recognized Neel as one of California's Fifty Leading Intellectual Property Litigators in their annual survey of the best attorneys in the state.
Shergul Arshad, VP, Business Development, StyleFeeder: Shergul is an accomplished executive with over 16 years of professional experience in online business development, eCommerce and traditional and non-traditional media. Shergul started his career at traditional advertising agencies, having spent seven years at Young & Rubicam and then Arnold Worldwide. After receiving his M.B.A. from the University of Michigan Business School, Shergul worked at FairMarket in sales and business development. He was instrumental in the sale of FairMarket to eBay, Inc., and he subsequently spent the next 2 years with eBay in California. Shergul was hired away from eBay to run Business Development for Sports Loyalty Systems, where he structured partnerships with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks. At StyleFeeder, Shergul has primarily focused his efforts on partnerships that grow traffic, memberships and revenue for the web's only personal shopping engine. Shergul has spoken at Digital Hollywood in both 2007 and 2008. Previously, Shergul was a featured speaker at the PromoExpo in Chicago while working for eBay, and was a featured speaker at the Los Angeles Dodgers sponsor retreat while with Sports Loyalty Systems. He holds a B.A. from Harvard University, and an M.B.A from the University of Michigan. Originally from Florence, Italy, Shergul currently resides in Lexington, MA with his wife and two kids.
Noel Jamieson Chandler, CEO and co-founder, Mosio: Noel is the CEO and Co-Founder of Mosio, an award winning social mobile search community. Headquartered in San Francisco, Mosio focuses on the convergence of mobile messaging and crowdsourcing, enabling users on-the-go to obtain information about anything using text messaging, mobile photos and videos. The company won the Mobile Category at the 2008 South by Southwest Web Awards and is currently an OnHollywood 100 Nominee. Since 2003, Noel has been a U.S. Trends Editor for HenleyCentre/Headlight Vision, an international strategic futures and marketing consultancy in London and Mumbai. Prior to founding Mosio in August of 2007, Noel was the Founder and President of Attack! Marketing, a guerrilla marketing agency specializing in the 18-35 demographic with offices in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Boulder. Attack! has worked with over 300 agencies and brands, including the production of the feasibility study for MINI Cooper and their "talking billboards" campaign, utilizing RFID and LED technologies.
Sam Thompson, Vice President, Progress Partners: With experience in both traditional and interactive media, Sams current efforts are focused on the new media and technology marketplace. Prior to Progress Partners, Sam worked at the Boston-based Phoenix Media/Communications Group in both the Media Sales and Finance departments. Positioned in the finance group as the Manager of its Trade Department, he focused on financing advertising campaigns for online, print, and radio media sales clients. His first exposure to the interactive space began at the San Francisco-based start-up, IGN Entertainment, Inc., now a division of News Corporation. While at IGN, working closely with Advertising Operations, Sam brought together the Client Relations framework, structure, and strategy for its media sales department. Sam graduated with a B.A. in Fine Arts from Lewis & Clark College in Portland , OR and in 2004 graduated Magna Cum Laude with an MBA from the F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College. Adding to his role at Progress Partners, and bringing purpose to his love of bicycles, Sam was recently elected to the board of directors for the local non-profit Massachusetts Bicycle Coalition as Vice President of Advocacy.
