The Connected TV and Set-top as the Consumer Gateway to Entertainment & Information – Set-Top, Broadband, Guides & PVRs
The combination of the TV, the set-top, the broadband connection and digital video recorder is breaking down the barriers of TV viewing experience. Every player in the entertainment and technology food chain – from content owner to middleware and headend operator, to the subscriber service provider and finally to the CE manufacturer, all play an equally key role. The idea that consumers might use a TV, demanding personal and enhanced video services, as they do a computer has arrived – and it is our job to make the future happen today. In the near future, viewers might be watching a football game and at the same time, on a second window on the TV, that viewer might also be shopping for tank-tops or buying snacks from the supermarket. That viewer might be taping a show, watching a movie and doing research for a term paper on the web at the same time. The TV set will serve as gateway to entertainment and information as sure as the computer opens the door to a world of information. TV, interactive TV, IPTV, PVR TV, broadband based TV, there will likely be as many ways to describe the way consumers will use and access content and programming as there are companies supplying the options. Larry Smith, Chief Operating Officer North America, Vice President Worldwide Business Development, ARCHOS: Larry Smith manages North American operations and Business Development worldwide for ARCHOS, overseeing the marketing, sales, distribution, strategic partnerships, and customer support for the company worldwide. His focus on forging relationships with major media companies around the globe drives the company’s content development strategy for its award-winning line of portable media players. Smith has more than 20 years experience in the entertainment, technology and retail industries, and joined ARCHOS from On Command Video Corporation, where he oversaw sales and operations for the in-hotel entertainment company. Previously, he was executive vice president of sales and marketing at IntelliReady Inc., a start-up venture designed to provide integrated home electronics services, and prior to that was cofounder and executive vice president of Internet Gift Registries, later acquired by Modern Bride. Smith has held sales and distribution positions in the satellite and cable industry at companies such as EchoStar Communications, Request Television, The Home Shopping Network and was one of the earliest employees at CNBC. Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from the University of Missouri.

James Henderson, Vice President Market, Product and Business Development, Comcast Corporation: James Henderson recently joined Comcast Corporation as Vice President Market, Product and Business Development. He is a member of the senior leadership team reporting to the EVP New Business Development, responsible for establishing the vision and strategic "mandate" for innovative product strategies, roadmap and aggregate plans that enables the aggressive deployment of entrepreneurial products (voice, video, data and wireless) targeted at consumer and small business customer segments. Where he will apply demonstrated success in accelerated lifecycle product environment leading teams of product managers and developers through disciplined product strategy, roadmap definition, customer requirements, marketing requirements and feature requirements, pricing, margins, demand/supply forecasting, channel inventory, attachment rates relative to growth predictions and profitability predictions. Prior to joining Comcast Mr. Henderson worked for 6 years at Charter Communications as the Vice President Corporate, Business & Product Strategy. His primary focus was to seek growth opportunities across Charter’s consumer and commercial businesses. He was responsible for developing the long term strategic plans to grow both the individual lines of business and the companies overall prospects; analyze and manage business development initiatives including new product and service launches, new category introduction, alliances, acquisitions, divestitures and joint ventures. Mr. Henderson provided advice and guidance to Charter’s senior management on growth strategies; new media technology, content and programming issues; and market entry strategies and overall distribution channels. He has led the development of major corporate initiatives from inception, competitive analysis, funding, deal negotiations and ultimate product or service launch. Prior to joining Charter in 1999 Mr. Henderson worked within the e-Citi, a division of Citicorp, as Vice President of Emerging Information Technology & Strategy with responsibilities for the integration of leading edge customer fulfillment and relationship capabilities. In addition he oversaw management, development, due diligence, validation and deployment of new service technologies. From 1989 through 1998, Mr. Henderson served in a wide range of increasing management roles with Bell Atlantic and its predecessor NYNEX. Prior to his departure he served as Managing Director Outside Plant. Mr. Henderson oversaw the successful implementation of $1.6 Billion in Outside Plant related agreements that comprised 1,200 contracts covering 8,000 OSP material and services. While with Bell Atlantic Mr. Henderson held management positions in technology & engineering, marketing, new product development, competitive strategies, research and development, regulatory, strategic business development, and sourcing. Mr. Henderson earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Manhattan College and a bachelor’s degree in physics from LeMoyne College. He also holds a master’s degree in finance from Fordham University.

Jay Fehnel, Vice President, TMS Entertainment Products: Jay Fehnel leads Tribune Media Services’ Entertainment Products division, an international leader in entertainment navigation. The division creates rich databases of television, movie and celebrity information used by thousands of media companies worldwide, as well as in TMS' own products for the print, online and interactive program guide (IPG) markets. The division also operates Zap2it.com, one of America's most popular entertainment Web sites, provides publishing and marketing services for cable and satellite operators and sells advertising for over 100 newspaper TV supplements. Fehnel previously served as Vice President, Business Development. In that role he led the company’s strategic planning process and identified growth opportunities for TMS, including internal start-ups, partnerships, acquisitions and investments. Fehnel has played key roles in TMS’ acquisition of five companies and in the launch of five new businesses. He is a member of the board of directors of YellowBrix, Inc., of Alexandria, Virginia, a provider of filtered news services for corporate users. Fehnel previously worked in research and marketing for the NBC TV Stations group, Katz Television and Walt Disney Company. He is a graduate of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and Purdue University.

Michael Hurlston is the Vice President and General Manager for the Home and Wireless Networking Business Unit at Broadcom Corporation. He has over 10 years of experience in the wireless industry spanning MMDS, 802.16, 802.11, and Bluetooth technologies. Prior to Broadcom, Mr. Hurlston was vice president of Marketing at Oren Semiconductor where he was involved in technical innovations in both the broadcast digital television and wide area wireless markets. Before joining Oren, Mr. Hurlston was director of Marketing at IC WORKS, where he developed spread spectrum clocking technology and co-authored several papers on the subject. He has been an active participant and contributor to the 802.11g committee of the Wi-Fi Alliance. Mr. Hurlston holds an MBA and a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering both from the University of California, Davis.






Chet Kanojia, Chief Executive Officer, is an innovative leader known for pushing beyond the conventional to discover breakthrough solutions. Under his leadership, Navic Networks has become the most widely deployed addressable advertising and interactive television solution provider to North American cable and DBS industries. Chet honed his entrepreneurial edge providing product strategy analysis, systems architecture design, and program management at Product Genesis, Inc., a strategic product development, consulting firm spun out of the MIT Innovation Center. Chet's background also includes doctoral-level work on the commercial applications of artificial intelligence. He holds a master's degree in Computer Systems Engineering from Northeastern University and a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Regional Engineering College Bhopal in India.







Steve Tranter, Director of Interactive Delivery for NDS Americas, is based out of NDS’ Southern California office, where he heads the interactive delivery group for NDS. Steve’s background is in systems design and integration for a variety of industries, including digital broadcasting, scientific instruments, image production and database technologies. During his 11 years with NDS, Steve has been involved in the design and implementation of some of the world's largest and most advanced digital broadcast systems. For the last 6 years Steve has worked with major platform and content providers to deploy some of the most successful and innovative interactive applications being used around the world today.









Jeff Binder, Senior Director, Connected Home Solutions, Motorola: Jeffrey Binder was founder and president of Television On-Demand leader Broadbus Technologies, acquired by Motorola in 2006. At Broadbus, he helped grow the company to more than 65 deployments worldwide with some of the world’s leading communications service providers. He was previously CEO of Magic Music, where he managed development of three generations of DRAM-based server technology, overseeing the overall operations of the company from start-up to 30%+ market-share in just two years. Binder is a named inventor to several patents, has authored key vision documents published in major industry journals regarding Television On-Demand (TOD®), and frequently presents at major audio and cable industry events. He is a member of NCTA, CTAM, SCTE and has been a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences since 1988.
