Matthew Evans, Vice President, Digital Media, NBC Universal Digital Studios: Matth ew Evans was named Vice President, Digital Media and head of NBC Universal Digital Studios in October 2006. He reports directly to George Kliavkoff, Chief Digital Officer, NBC Universal. In this role, Evans is responsible for the creation of original, video-based engaging experiences across multiple platforms for major consumer brands and third party distributors, as well as producing cross-platform programming for internal businesses. Evans also manages relationships with NBC Universals internal sales force and external agencies, as well as creative talent, to generate new digital advertising revenue for the Company. Previously, Matthew was Strategic Marketing Director for NBC Universal Digital Media. Before joining NBCU, Evans served as the Director of Programming for AOL Moviefone. As AOLs business lead for the movies channel, Evans managed programming and operations for the second highest revenue category in the company. His work creating the American Express / Tribeca Film Festival campaign on Moviefone garnered the 2006 OMMA Award for Best Content Integration and the 2006 MIXX Award for Best Brand Awareness & Positioning. Prior to AOL, Evans served as General Manager, RollingStone.com & GetMusic for Vivendi Universal and Vice President, New York Operations for Vivendi Universal Net USA (VUNet USA). He was also a founding member of the management team at GetMusic, a member of the e-commerce and advanced technology team at Universal Studios and worked with eGreetings where he launched their first web-based digital greeting card service, and established their first ECRM and affiliate marketing programs. Evans is a graduate of Cornell University.
BETSY SCOLNIK, President, National Geographic Digital Media: Betsy Scolnik w as named president of National Geographic Digital Media in March 2007. She oversees all NGV digital media and business initiatives, including operating Nationalgeographic.com and its digital extensions, and managing the National Geographic digital film archive and short-form video programming, production and distribution. She also heads content development efforts for the Nationalgeographic.com Web site and Digital Medias initiatives in the wireless, video game, broadband and education markets. Since joining National Geographic in September 2005 as vice president of content operations for National Geographic Digital Media, Scolnik has been a key player in the expansion of Nationalgeographic.com, with the redesign of the homepage and the launch of worldmusic.nationalgeographic.com, the widely acclaimed world music Web site that both musicians and consumers have embraced. She launched National Geographic Podcasts, which regularly appear in the IPod top 50 podcasts. She has managed the growth of the short-form programming, production and distribution unit, which was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2006. Scolnik has a wide range of interactive content and operations experience tied to the emergence and growth of digital media, including extensive international experience. Prior to joining National Geographic, Scolnik worked at AOL for four years. From 2003 she served as vice president and general manager entertainment for AOL Europe based at AOLs U.S. and European operations in Dulles, Va., and London. She was a key player in the development and execution of AOLs highly successful Live 8 series of concerts. Previously, Scolnik worked for StarMedia network, then the largest Spanish- and Portuguese-language Internet media company, where she ran business development and programming for the StarMedia services across South America and Europe. Scolnik has a B.S. in international relations from the University of California at Berkeley. She lives in Washington, D.C.
Joe Michaels is Director of Business Development / Entertainment and Video Se rvices for MSN, charged with the ramp up of strategic growth in entertainment-related partnerships for the MSN network and its customers. MSN.com is a world leader in delivering compelling programmed content experiences to consumers. Michaels drives entertainment deals and opportunities covering MSN Video, Movies and TV and other areas of entertainment. He has been at Microsoft since 2001 and in his previous position as senior business development manager at MSN Video, negotiated digital media deals with numerous television networks, Major League Baseball Advanced Media, Mark Burnett Productions, and many other major media companies. Before joining Microsoft, Michaels co-founded Nexchange Corporation, an online affiliate marketing company.
Brent Weinstein, CEO, 60Frames Entertainment: Brent Weinstein is CEO and o ne of the key architects of 60Frames Entertainment, the innovative, Beverly Hills-based financing, ad sales and syndication company for professional artists to create and monetize original online content. Prior to 60Frames, Weinstein was head of Digital Media at leading Hollywood talent and literary agency UTA, where he helped form the department in 2004 to oversee the agencys digital practice areas, including broadband, video games and mobile entertainment. Weinstein led the dept.s team of dedicated digital media agents to identify and evaluate opportunities for UTA clients: actors, writers, directors, producers, and recording artists, in addition to many business-to-business and consumer-oriented technology and corporate clients. Weinstein, with UTA co-founder and partner Jeremy Zimmer, also formed UTAOnline (www.utaonline.net), a dedicated broadband division that finds and represents the next generation of web-based content artists. Launched in October 2006, UTAOnline is the first of its kind among major talent agencies. During his tenure at UTA, Weinstein made digital media deals for many of the best known artists in entertainment, including Johnny Depp, Jack Black, Jim Carrey, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, as well as top digital media artists such as Big Fantastic (Prom Queen), AskANinja (askaninja.com), and others. Prior to joining UTA in 2001, Weinstein practiced corporate and business litigation in Los Angeles and Irvine, California. He is a graduate of the University of Southern California, where he earned a Bachelors degree in Business Administration, and the University of San Diego School of Law. He is married and lives in Los Angeles.
Jon Vlassopulos is Vice President, Business Development, Strategic Planning and New Media for Endemol USA, the largest independent television production company in the world. He is responsible for developing new distribution channels and creative revenue opportunities for Endemols library of shows as well as developing programming for non traditional platforms such as VOD, broadband, and wireless. Since joining Endemol USA, Jon has been instrumental in the growth of the new media division. Highlights at the company include producing the first show for Comcast to be shown exclusively on their digital platforms, as well as developing the United States first major call-TV show for TBS. Previously Jon was President of Kargo, a leading mobile content company that publishes the mobile applications of major media brands such as Vibe, Spin, Weekly World News, and Premiere. Prior to Kargo Global, Jon was Senior Director of business development and strategic partnerships at Cingular Wireless. He managed the entertainment product groups (ringtones, wallpapers, photos, music etc), media partnerships, a youth group focused on delivering cutting edge new applications and services. He launched the industrys first end to end wireless music service, the first music recognition service, and the largest SMS brand campaigns with Kelloggs and McDonalds. Vlassopulos has also held executive positions at AT&T Wireless and at the major media conglomerate Bertelsmann AG, working in New York, Hong Kong, and Tokyo in their music, media, and technology businesses where he spearheaded many of the companys new digital initiatives. Jon received his undergraduate degree from Durham University in Chinese, Economics and Korean. He is a regular speaker at Media and Wireless conferences such as CTIA, Digital Hollywood, Digital Commerce Summit, Music 2.0, NAPTE, Mobile Entertainment Forum, Digital Music Forum and others.
Jeff Berman is General Manager of MySpace TV and Senior Vice President for Pu blic Affairs at MySpace.com, the worlds largest social networking community. Since coming to MySpace, Jeff has overseen the launch of MySpace TV, Presidential Dialogues with MTV, the Impact Channel, and a host of other programs. Jeff joined MySpace after running his own strategic, political, and crisis communications consulting firm working with a range of non-profit, political, and private interests. From 2001-2005, he served as Chief Counsel to US Senator Chuck Schumer and Staff Director of the Subcommittee on Administrative Oversight and the Courts. Prior to working on Capitol Hill, Jeff was a public defender specializing in representing children charged in adult criminal courts. While in DC, he also served as an adjunct professor at the Georgetown University Law Center. A frequent commentator on politics, social issues, and media, Jeff has lectured at dozens of the nations leading universities and has made frequent appearances on television news outlets. Jeff received his J.D. from Yale Law School and graduated Connecticut College summa cum laude. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife Melissa, a television producer, and their son.
Tim Chang, Principal, Norwest Venture Partners: Tim brings a combination of o perational, technical and international business experience to Norwest Venture Partners. Tim focuses on investments in wireless and digital media as well as business development initiatives in Asia-Pacific. Prior to joining NVP in 2006, Tim was a principal at Gabriel Venture Partners where he was actively involved in over a dozen wireless-related deals and led Gabriel's investments in Iridigm Display Corporation (acquired by Qualcomm), Eyespot, Sequoia Communications, Sandbridge, and Kajeet. He also contributed to the boards of Placeware (acquired by Microsoft) and Arula Systems (acquired by Raritan), TestQuest, NextG Networks, and IPWireless. Tim built Gabriel's wireless sector practice and helped establish business development capabilities through strong, strategic relationships across the wireless value chain, particularly in Asia-Pacific. Prior to joining Gabriel, Tim spent more than five years working in Japan. He was a product manager at Gateway Inc. where he successfully launched direct-marketed PC servers in the Japanese market and quickly grew an enterprise product line into a full offering of network desktops, workstations, servers and configurable turn-key solutions. Prior to Gateway, Tim was a development engineer for General Motors. As a tri-lingual engineer based in Tokyo, Tim led project teams in China, Korea and Japan in the develelopment, testing and sales of advanced chassis control systems for such clients as Toyota and Daewoo. Tim began his career in venture capital in 1999 during his time at Stanford Business School as part of the founding team of CTR Ventures K.K., a venture accelerator in Tokyo focused on seed and early-stage mobile consumer applications for the Japanese market. Tim currently serves on the advisory boards of the Wireless Communications Alliance (WCA), IBD Under the Radar, Digital Hollywood, VC Task Force Wireless SIG, Silicon Valley Chinese Wireless Association, as well as the IBF Wireless Investor Summit. Tim holds an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he was an Arjay Miller Scholar, and an MS in electrical engineering/system engineering as well as a BS in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan.
