Robertson Barrett, Vice President & General Manager, Los Angeles Times Interactive/latimes.com: Robertson Barrett, vice president and general manager of Los Angeles Times Interactive, is responsible for the development and growth of The Times interactive brands and products, a $75 million portfolio that includes latimes.com, calendarlive.com, TheEnvelope.com Recycler.com and the regional franchises of Careerbuilder.com, Cars.com and other classifieds properties. Barrett has been a new media executive managing online ventures for more than 10 years, including senior positions at Primedia Inc.'s Channel One Network, ABCNEWS.com TIME Online. At The Feedroom, Barrett managed the day-to-day operations for the NBC and Tribune-backed broadband venture that became the number one source for streaming video news on the Web. Barrett was also vice president and general manager for Primedia Inc.'s Channel One Network, managing Internet operations and new platform development, and he served as managing producer at ABCNEWS.com and deputy editor at TIME Online. Barrett began his career as a staff writer for The News & Observer in Raleigh, NC. After earning a B.A. degree in Ancient Greek from Duke University in Durham, NC in 1988, Barrett received an M.A. degree in public policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 1994.
Joel Sucherman, Executive Producer, USAToday: For almost 15 years, Mr. Suc herman has been a pioneer in the field of new media for USA TODAY. Most recently he has been the editorial lead on the redesign and re-launch of USATODAY.com, incorporating social networking tools that are more closely connecting readers with reporters and the reporting. The new site invites readers to be part of the conversation, forming a USA community around the news. A journalist with more than 20 years of experience overall, Mr. Sucherman was tasked with creating USATODAY.coms first Multimedia department in 1999. He helped bring streaming audio and video to the Web site. He spearheaded USA TODAYs multimedia coverage from the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, and the 2000 Republican and Democratic national conventions. His efforts at the political conventions, which included twice-daily live Webcasts, earned him one of USA TODAYs highest honors, the Luminary Award. In 1992, Mr. Sucherman was an anchor/reporter for one of Gannetts earliest forays into new media, sending news and information to wireless platforms (cell phones, pagers and handhelds). He also was one of USA TODAYs first online columnists, writing weekly on the NFL. Prior to working for Gannett, he was White House and Congressional correspondent for a national radio bureau. Mr. Sucherman is a graduate of the University of Illinois, with a degree in broadcast journalism.
Sue Cross, Vice President/Online, U.S. Newspaper Markets, Associated Press. C ross directs AP strategy, product development, business operations and online services for newspaper Web sites that collectively reach 60 million people a month. Current projects include expansion of APs Online Video Network, launched in 2006, development of Money & Markets, an innovative financial information service bridging print and online publications and redevelopment of APs hosted news services to create customizable, modular content and advertising options for more than 600 news Web sites. With a combined editorial and business background, Cross specializes in creating and packaging content that can be leveraged for multiple formats and audiences. In 2004-2005, Cross served as APs western regional vice president and led national expansion of APs services for the growing ethnic media market. With creation of new products combining APs domestic and international reporting strengths, she tripled APs U.S. Spanish market in two years. Cross brings to online business development a passion for news and more than 20 years of newsroom leadership. From 1998 through 2003 she was chief of bureau for Los Angeles, APs largest domestic news bureau, overseeing international, national and state coverage from California. Cross created a multimedia newsroom and expanded APs West Coast entertainment report with a focus on real-time coverage of entertainment events. She has been a bureau chief in Phoenix, assistant chief and news editor in Chicago, news editor for Texas, and covered the oil industry, environmental issues, politics, labor and immigration as a reporter in Ohio and Alaska. Cross has a BS in journalism from Ohio State University and is active in numerous journalism boards and organizations. The AP is a not-for-profit cooperative serving 1,700 newspapers and 5,000 radio and television stations in the U.S., plus more than 8,500 news media outlets in 121 other countries. Benjamin Chen, Chairman and Chief Technology Officer, Mochila: Benjamin Chen is a 20-year veteran of high tech startups. Prior to Mochila, Mr. Chen was a founder of AppGenesys, a leading managed services web hosting provider for Fortune 500 clients, partnered with Intel, Softbank, JP Morgan, where he was Chairman, CEO and CTO. Previously, Mr. Chen was the CIO and CTO at iXL, a strategic e-business consulting firm. At iXL, he helped grow the company from 100 to 3,000 employees worldwide and from $2M to $120M revenue per quarter. During Mr. Chen's tenure, iXL was known for delivering innovative technology solutions to the F500, included a $50M contract with Delta Airlines and $100M contract with General Electric. Other key customers included AT&T, CheapTickets.com, FEDEX, Sony (AiBO Launch), Tickets.com, and WebMD. Mr. Chen was part of the executive management team that helped take iXL public in 1999. Prior to iXL, Mr. Chen worked at CBS Studio Center, as a technologist working on some of the first convergence of prime time television content and the internet. Mr. Chen also produced the 1996 Emmy Awards Cybercast, demonstrating the worlds largest number of internet video streams that year. Mr. Chen has also served on the advisory/boards of Teralytics and Exodus/Digital Island, a Cable and Wireless Company. He received a B.S. in international finance from the University of Southern California.
David Anthony, Co-Founder, Bondi Digital Publishing: A lifelong entrepreneur, Da vid Anthony has been successfully bringing together creative media and emerging technologies to create entirely new consumer experiences for over a decade. Davids expertise in the migration to digital on a variety of media platforms, including music, DVDs, gaming and now, the magazine publishing industry has allowed Bondi to set the standard in digital publishing. In 2004, Anthony co-founded Bondi Digital Publishing, a company that creates, designs and publishes complete print magazine archive box sets in digital editions. As co-founder of Bondi Digital Publishing, Anthony pioneered the emerging platform of digital publishing through the development of the landmark The Complete New Yorker, the first accessible and easily searchable electronic archive of its kind (released September 2005). Anthonys unique perspective and strong digital media background has resulted in Bondi achieving major development and distribution deals with distinguished media corporations Condé Nast, Wenner Media, and Playboy Enterprises. Prior to Bondi, acting as President, Anthony co-founded Metropolis DVD in 1998. The company quickly developed a reputation for innovative programming by helping major media companiesincluding Viacom, Paramount, Universal Pictures, Warner Music, and Disney International Publishingdevelop and implement their DVD strategies. As a result, Metropolis won numerous awards and produced ground-breaking DVDs, including, The Directors Series (featuring the work of Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry and Chris Cunningham) numerous DVDs for the acclaimed Criterion Collection, The Rolling Stones Four Flicks (the No. 1 music DVD of all-time), The Beastie Boys Anthology, and Janet Jacksons All for You. In 2005 Metropolis DVD evolved into Giant Interactive, a company currently developing rich media experiences for major media companies in DVD, HD-DVD, DVD gaming, and interactive television. In addition to his role at Bondi, Anthony acts as Co-Founder and Executive Producer at Giant. Grammy nominated in 2003, Anthony holds a Bachelors degree in Media Arts, the first awarded by Bennington College.
